8 Romantasy Book Duologies That Deserve TV Adaptations

Long fantasy romance series are incredibly popular right now, but shorter, two-book stories can be just as captivating – and they’re often better suited for TV adaptations. These duologies offer a sweet spot for readers: they allow for deeper immersion in a fantasy world compared to a single book, without the long-term commitment of a five-book (or longer!) series.

With streaming services like Prime Video and Netflix eager to adapt epic fantasy romance series from authors like Rebecca Yarros and Callie Hart, shorter, two-book romantasy series are gaining appeal. These duologies offer complete stories with rich worlds and compelling romances, making them ideal for limited series adaptations. They’re also a safer bet for adaptation, as they’re less likely to be canceled before the story is finished – something fans experienced with the show Shadow and Bone. Whether animated or live-action, these books have a lot to offer viewers.

All The Stars And Teeth Duology By Adalyn Grace

All the Stars and Teeth (2020) | All the Tides of Fate (2021)

Swashbuckling romance continues to captivate readers, and Adalyn Grace’s All the Stars and Teeth series shows us why. After a magical display goes wrong, Princess Amora must go on the run and seeks help from a charming, rebellious pirate named Bastian, who commands a ship that sails on its own. Together, they face perilous adventures on the high seas, battling mermaids and monstrous creatures as they uncover a frightening secret.

The success of Netflix’s live-action One Piece shows there’s a huge interest in pirate stories. With HBO Max recently canceling the charming pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death, now is the perfect time for another streaming service to take on a grand, romantic, and imaginative adventure on the high seas. An animated series would be a great fit, as the book’s magical conflicts would be visually stunning in any animation style.

The Shepherd King Duology By Rachel Gillig

One Dark Window (2022) | Two Twisted Crowns (2023)

Rachel Gillig’s popular BookTok series, a blend of gothic horror and romance, would make a great two-part TV show. The story primarily follows Elspeth, a young woman living with a creature inside her mind, but also offers viewpoints from other characters, like her love interest Ravyn, the captain of the Destriers, and Ravyn’s cousin, Elm – the son of a volatile and dangerous king.

A television series would allow for a deeper look into the unusual and intertwined connection between Elspeth and the creature living in her mind – perhaps visualized in a way similar to Eleven’s powers in Stranger Things. The world of Blunder, with its decaying castles and foggy forests, would be a stunning backdrop, and the Tarot-based magic system feels better suited for the detailed storytelling a TV show allows. Ultimately, Gillig’s story is a character-driven drama about finding oneself and dealing with loss, and that kind of story benefits from a slower, more deliberate pace.

Sands Of Arawiya Duology By Hafsah Faizal

We Hunt the Flame (2019) | We Free the Stars (2021)

Hafsah Faizal’s Sands of Arawiya books are a captivating blend of romance, fantasy, and adventure – everything fans of the genre love. The series, set in a world inspired by ancient Arabia, begins with We Hunt the Flame. It follows Zafira, a skilled hunter, and Nasir, a prince with a deadly reputation, as they journey to find a powerful artifact that could bring magic back to their kingdom. Though they’re on the same quest, their motivations are completely different: Zafira hopes to end a devastating war, while Nasir has been ordered to eliminate the legendary Hunter – Zafira herself.

Faizal’s first two books share common elements with other popular young adult fantasy romance stories, but their unique, non-European setting and the intense chemistry between Zafira and Nasir—which feels similar to the connection in Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone—make the Sands of Arawiya series perfect for a captivating TV adaptation.

The Anatomy Duology By Dana Schwartz

Anatomy: A Love Story (2022) | Immortality: A Love Story (2023)

Dana Schwartz’s Anatomy duology tells the story of Hazel Sinnet, a woman determined to become a surgeon in 19th-century Scotland. Facing societal barriers that prevented women from entering the medical field, Hazel is expelled from the Edinburgh Anatomist’s Society. Undeterred, she teams up with Jack Currer, who illegally obtains bodies, to find cadavers for her to practice on – a partnership that suggests a love built to endure. If a couple can find love while working together in such unusual circumstances, their connection is destined to be strong.

If you enjoyed The Artful Dodger on Hulu and Disney+, you’ll likely be captivated by Schwartz’s new medical drama. The developing love story between Hazel and Jack is sweetly touching, even with all the unsettling imagery, and a surprising fantastical element sets it apart. This series would be a truly original romantasy, and a streaming service should start developing it immediately.

The Celestial Kingdom Duology By Sue Lynn Tan

Daughter of the Moon Goddess (2022) | Heart of the Sun Warrior (2022)

Sue Lynn Tan’s Celestial Kingdom books are much more than just a romance. They’re a grand story inspired by Chinese mythology, taking place in a magical world above the clouds, filled with gods and monsters. The stunning setting would make for an amazing animated series, enhancing the story’s dreamlike quality. Beyond that, it’s a deeply moving story about love, responsibility, loss, and integrity.

The story of Xingyin trying to save her mother, Chang’e, is packed with drama – including a love triangle with a prince and a brave soldier, and the growing anger of a powerful emperor. It’s a compelling narrative with enough depth for a full two seasons of television, and it features a surprising plot twist that would make for an amazing mid-season finale. You definitely wouldn’t want to miss it!

The Crimson Moth Duology By Kristen Ciccarelli

Heartless Hunter (2024) | Rebel Witch (2025)

The enemies-to-lovers trope is popular in fantasy romance, and it’s especially compelling when magic is involved. In Kristen Ciccarelli’s Heartless Hunter, we meet Rune, who appears to be a shallow socialite but secretly leads a double life as a powerful witch fighting crime. After a recent revolution, Rune must keep her powers hidden, but her secret is threatened by Gideon Sharpe, a determined witch hunter. Unaware of Rune’s true identity, Gideon finds himself captivated by the very witch he’s been tasked with finding – and she’s been subtly flirting with him to gather information!

As a total film and TV buff, I’m completely captivated by the connection between Rune and Gideon – it’s a beautiful, heartbreaking dynamic. Rune’s hidden secret? It’s seriously gripping and could easily sustain a limited series or even a two-season show. Honestly, we need more witch stories on our screens, and a Crimson Moth adaptation would be a fantastic addition to the romantasy world. I’d be first in line to watch!

Saga Of The Unfated Duology By Danielle L. Jensen

A Fate Inked in Blood (2024) | A Curse Carved in Bone (2025)

The first book in Danielle L. Jensen’s The Bridge Kingdom series is being made into a movie, but her Saga of the Unfated duology would be perfect for a TV show. Netflix seems to agree! They optioned A Fate Inked in Blood, the first book in Jensen’s romantasy series inspired by Norse mythology, back in August 2025. Unfortunately, there haven’t been any new announcements about its progress since then.

A Fate Inked in Blood centers around Freya, a warrior in training who possesses a hidden and powerful ability—she draws strength from a goddess’s blood. When her secret is discovered, she faces a difficult choice: give in to her feelings for the man tasked with her protection, or risk both her own future and the well-being of her country, which relies on her survival. A television series based on this story would likely have a similar feel to Vikings rather than Game of Thrones, offering a fresh take within the popular romantasy genre.

The Scorched Throne Duology By Sara Hashem

The Jasad Heir (2023) | The Jasad Crown (2025)

If you loved ancient Egypt as a child and now enjoy fantasy novels, Sara Hashem’s Scorched Throne duology is for you. It centers on Sylvia, the hidden princess of the Jasad Kingdom, who possesses great magical ability. However, magic is forbidden – Jasad was conquered by the Nizahl ten years ago, and magic was outlawed. When Sylvia is suddenly forced to use her powers, she encounters her most dangerous foe: Prince Arin of the Nizahl.

The Scorched Throne books tell a sweeping story of two kingdoms locked in conflict, and the young people who will decide their fate. Author Hashem creates a richly imagined world, and the main character, Sylvia, is a powerful and captivating heroine who stands alongside the best female leads in today’s romantic fantasy novels.
