Christopher Nolan showed CinemaCon a brief clip from his new film, and it unexpectedly changed how viewers understand Charlize Theron’s role in the story.
The newly released video confirmed a long-standing rumor, but with a surprising revelation: the Oscar-winning actress isn’t playing the character everyone thought she was, and her connection to Matt Damon’s Odysseus comes from an unexpected part of Greek mythology.
Charlize Theron’s role in The Odyssey revealed
Charlize Theron will star as Calypso in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey. The news was announced during a presentation at CinemaCon, where Nolan showed a preview of the movie featuring Theron’s character alongside Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The scene begins with Damon’s character, Odysseus, asking Calypso how long he’s been with her and admitting he has no memory of his life before the Trojan War. He wonders if he had a family – a wife, children, or a son – and, if so, how old his son would be now. The clip then shows flashbacks of a younger Odysseus with his son, played by Tom Holland, and his wife, played by Anne Hathaway.
Recent confirmations from Calypso clarify previous reports that Charlize Theron will play Circe, the goddess known for her magic. Theron actually hinted at the role back in June 2025 during an interview with Variety on a red carpet, before filming began. She said, “I’m going to talk to Chris [Nolan] about it and see what happens. It’s really intimidating, and I’ll be the last one to arrive on set.”
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Charlize Theron discussed arriving late to the set. She joked that she feels like the ‘new kid’ and, while she knows the project is massive based on the script, she’ll only be filming for about two weeks.
Nolan filmed the entire movie using IMAX cameras and said the process was incredibly challenging. He even described the shoot as a “nightmare” while speaking at CinemaCon.
Following the success of his award-winning film Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s next movie, The Odyssey, will be released in theaters on July 17, 2026.
