As a huge TV fan, I remember from 2009 to 2020, you couldn’t really talk about great shows without mentioning it. When it finally ended after eleven seasons, it genuinely felt like saying goodbye to family – so many of us were completely heartbroken.
We always set out to make people laugh, and we didn’t intentionally want to get into political themes. However, the nature of the characters led us there. Ultimately, our main goal was simply to entertain, to help people escape their worries, and to allow viewers to see themselves reflected in the characters – that’s what good storytelling and television do. We believe we achieved this for eleven years, and with our talented writing and acting team, we could have continued for many more. We were all passionate about our work and enjoyed working together.
The show ended on its own terms in 2020, not because the network canceled it due to poor viewership or other issues unrelated to the story. Although there were rumors it would finish after Season 10, the creators, Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, were inspired by what happened that season and decided to continue for one more season. This gave the show a chance to give its large cast a satisfying conclusion, culminating in an emotional series finale.
A storyline featuring Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s character was initially considered but ultimately rejected by the network. Despite this, Mitch and Cam remain important representations of LGBTQ+ couples on television. The show highlighted both the difficulties and joys of a same-sex couple adopting a daughter, helping to make LGBTQ+ families more visible and accepted. Modern Family also addressed the issue of gay marriage, notably through Mitch and Cam’s wedding in Season 5.
We often hear that Mitch and Cam helped people feel more comfortable being themselves and accepting support from their loved ones,” Stonestreet shared. “We’re really proud of the work we did on the show. Whether it made you laugh or even changed your perspective, that means a lot to us, and we had a great time doing it.
Eric Stonestreet Reveals the Modern Family Cast’s Favorite Compliment From Fans
Besides bringing families closer, Eric Stonestreet says the cast of Modern Family always loved hearing that people watched the show together. He shared with pride, “That was the best compliment – knowing families bonded over our show.” Stonestreet believes everyone needs quality time with family, a chance to disconnect from busy lives and simply enjoy 22 minutes of laughter and fun with a lighthearted comedy.
Stonestreet continues to find joy in the lasting impact of Modern Family. He especially loves meeting children who weren’t even born when the show began, and are now fans. It reminds him of being a kid and meeting actors from classic shows like Gilligan’s Island or The Brady Bunch – people who created memorable experiences even years later. Knowing he can have that same effect on a new generation is incredibly rewarding.
Eric Stonestreet, known for his role on Modern Family, will guest star in the final episode of Season 2 of Happy’s Place, which stars Reba McEntire. He’ll play a couples’ therapist that McEntire’s character, Bobbie, and her sister consult when they face difficulties with their bar. While a departure from his famous character Cameron Tucker, Stonestreet continues to find success in comedy television.
As a big TV fan, I wanted to share a quick update on where you can watch some shows! You can find all of Modern Family over on Hulu and Disney+. And if you’re following Happy’s Place, the season finale airs this Friday, April 24th, on NBC. Don’t worry if you miss it – it’ll be available to stream on Peacock the very next day.
