‘Top Gun 3’ Officially Announced and Tom Cruise Is Returning

For over thirty years, rumors circulated about Tom Cruise wanting to make another Top Gun movie, but nothing ever materialized. It wasn’t until Joseph Kosinski, the director of TRON: Legacy, signed on to direct Top Gun: Maverick that things started to come together. Even then, the film faced setbacks due to the coronavirus pandemic, delaying both production and its release. However, the nearly 40-year wait proved worthwhile, as Top Gun: Maverick became one of the most successful films of 2022.

Tom Cruise is set to return for a third Top Gun movie, Paramount announced at CinemaCon today, according to Variety. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer will also be back, and Ehren Kruger, who helped write Maverick, is already working on the script. While a third film was discussed as early as 2024, it wasn’t certain to happen. Given Bruckheimer’s history with successful franchises, many believed a Top Gun sequel was likely, it was just a question of timing.

Similar to many sequels released years after the original, Top Gun: Maverick not only brought back Tom Cruise, but also introduced a fresh group of actors like Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Monica Barbaro. This is common in long-running franchises – new cast members can take center stage while original stars move into supporting roles. While a future sequel might focus more on these newer actors, the fact that Tom Cruise remains involved is welcome news for fans.

Whether or not Kosinski will direct the sequel is still up in the air, especially since he’s already found success with the critically acclaimed film F1. Although he played a big role in making Maverick a hit, Bruckheimer might decide to work with a new, innovative director this time around.

Tom Cruise didn’t just revitalize the Top Gun franchise; he was also nearing the end of his run with Mission: Impossible. That’s why Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation introduced actors like Jeremy Renner and Rebecca Ferguson, possibly as future leads. However, those films were so successful that Cruise continued starring, with Renner departing after Rogue Nation and Ferguson’s character being killed off in Dead Reckoning.

Originally, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning was intended to be the last film in the series, potentially freeing up director Christopher McQuarrie for other projects. A Top Gun 3, starring Cruise, appears to be a likely and promising next step for the pair, even before production begins.
