Apple TV has a new horror comedy series that’s become a hit, actually breaking a record on Rotten Tomatoes for the platform. Like many shows on Apple TV+, this one demonstrates the service’s focus on offering a smaller number of high-quality programs.
Apple TV is finding success with this strategy because it’s building a reputation for quality and making viewers expect something unique from every original show they release. Although Apple TV is best known for its science fiction programs and adaptations, they recently tried something different with the horror comedy series, Widow’s Bay.
Everyone was excited about the cast of Widow’s Bay, and the show has definitely lived up to the hype. Even with high expectations, Widow’s Bay on Apple TV has exceeded them, and after just four episodes, it’s broken a Rotten Tomatoes record, proving it’s a must-watch.
Widow’s Bay Is Officially The Highest Rated Horror Show On Apple TV
Apple TV+ doesn’t have a large selection of horror shows. Currently, it features only three original horror series: Servant, Lisey’s Story, and Widow’s Bay. Lisey’s Story, based on the Stephen King novel, didn’t receive much critical acclaim and wasn’t a major success.
While Servant was also well-received, earning a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and running for four seasons, Widow’s Bay has become the new standout show. It achieved an incredible 97% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing Servant and many other popular and critically acclaimed series on the streaming platform.
It’s still uncertain if Widow’s Bay will be back for additional seasons, but the positive reviews it’s received so far are a good sign. Servant was Apple TV+’s first attempt at horror, and while it opened the door to the genre, the streaming service hasn’t yet been able to significantly expand its horror offerings or become a major player in it.
The positive reception to Widow’s Bay signals a strong comeback for Apple TV in the horror genre, a category it’s previously been known for with its high-quality sci-fi and comedies. If the show also performs well with audiences, Apple TV may decide to create more horror content and expand its offerings in this area.
Widow’s Bay Is The Best Horror Series In Years
Recently, Mike Flanagan’s horror series on Netflix were incredibly popular and seemed to represent the height of the genre on television. Though shows like From and Archive 81 show potential, none have had quite the same lasting impact or captured the public’s attention as Flanagan’s most successful projects.
Shows like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass were scary and thought-provoking, while also offering a fresh take on horror. Now, Widow’s Bay appears to be following a similar approach, successfully blending horror and comedy.
I’m absolutely captivated by Apple TV+’s ability to blend humor and genuine terror – some of their scenes are just brilliant! And their latest episode, Widow’s Bay, completely blew me away. It was a solid 35 minutes of truly chilling folk horror, honestly, it felt even more impactful than a lot of big-budget movies I’ve seen.
If viewers continue to enjoy Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay, it’s likely the show will be renewed for a second season. Hopefully, Widow’s Bay will be the start of Apple TV investing more in horror content.
