Looking at the Pirates of the Caribbean movies overall, one film often gets overlooked. While the original trilogy is rightly praised, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is probably better than you recall and deserves another viewing, even 15 years after it came out in 2011.
While On Stranger Tides certainly stands apart from the first three Pirates movies in terms of its story and overall feel, it’s a unique installment. With fewer returning characters, it took a different direction, which probably explains why audiences had mixed reactions when it initially came out – even though it still did well in theaters.
I recently rewatched On Stranger Tides, and honestly, I enjoyed it a lot more this time around! It really stands on its own as a fun, lighthearted pirate movie. It doesn’t quite reach the same level as the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, but it’s surprisingly entertaining and way more enjoyable than a lot of people online seem to think. I’m a big fan and think it deserves another look!
2011’s On Stranger Tides Was A Very Different POTC Movie
Instead of continuing the stories from the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films – like Will and Elizabeth’s relationship, the Flying Dutchman, or the fight between pirates and the East India Trading Company – On Stranger Tides focuses on a new adventure hinted at in the third movie: the quest for the legendary Fountain of Youth.
The fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie centers on Captain Jack Sparrow’s involvement in a frantic search for the Fountain of Youth. He finds himself caught between the British and Spanish navies, and the dangerous pirate Blackbeard, along with his daughter Angelica. While still filled with swashbuckling adventure and classic nautical lore, ‘On Stranger Tides’ boldly takes the series in a fresh direction, drawing inspiration from Tim Powers’ novel of the same name.
Interestingly, On Stranger Tides only brought back six actors from previous films: Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, Geoffrey Rush as Hector Barbossa, Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs, Keith Richards as Captain Teague, and Damian O’Hare and Greg Ellis as British officers Gillette and Theodore Groves. This gave the movie a feeling of a fresh start. Even though At World’s End had a small setup for this film, you don’t need to know much about the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies to enjoy On Stranger Tides.
Similarly, On Stranger Tides differs from the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film, Dead Men Tell No Tales (released in 2017), because it tells a complete story on its own. It seems Disney was trying to make the Pirates movies more self-contained, focusing on individual adventures, with Jack Sparrow being the main character connecting them all.
Despite Its Flaws, On Stranger Tides Is Still A Highly Entertaining Ride
While On Stranger Tides isn’t perfect, its attempts to create a new romance with the mermaid character don’t quite fill the void left by Will and Elizabeth. Also, the story becomes overly complicated as the movie progresses, especially in its final act.
Even so, I still enjoy watching On Stranger Tides. The best part is definitely Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow – I think this movie has some of his funniest scenes and lines throughout the whole series. His impersonation of a judge and the fake trial for Gibbs early on is particularly hilarious, and his attempt to start a mutiny on the Queen Anne’s Revenge is also great.
I have to say, Ian McShane absolutely killed it as Blackbeard – seriously, one of the best casting choices they’ve ever made! And watching Penélope Cruz and Johnny Depp together was so much fun. I also loved the complicated relationship between Jack Sparrow and Barbossa, now that Barbossa is working with the British Navy. But honestly, I think On Stranger Tides is underrated when it comes to how good it looks. That mermaid attack scene still gives me chills – it’s easily one of the most visually stunning and creepy moments in all the Pirates movies.
While On Stranger Tides might not be the greatest Pirates of the Caribbean film, it’s better than many remember. Fifteen years on, it’s a really easy, enjoyable movie to put on when you just want something lighthearted to watch on Disney+.
