Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Gets Major Filming Update With First Look Of Villain

Sonic races to the finish line.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 features Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles teaming up with Amy Rose to fight a new threat. They must battle Metal Sonic, a powerful and dangerous robot created by Dr. Robotnik specifically to destroy Sonic.

I’m so excited! Jeff Fowler, the director behind all the live-action Sonic movies, just announced that filming for the new one is officially wrapped! He shared a picture on Instagram of himself with a Metal Sonic figure – it’s awesome! They teased Metal Sonic at the end of the last movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and it looks like he’s going to be a huge part of the next one. I can’t wait to see what Fowler and the team have created!

Details about the plot of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 are still mostly secret, but Ben Schwartz will once again voice Sonic. The movie boasts a big cast, including Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Kristen Bell as Amy Rose, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, and Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone. Nick Offerman, Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry, and Ben Kingsley are also confirmed to appear, though their characters haven’t been revealed yet.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movies have been a major success. The latest film, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released in December 2024, is the highest-grossing movie in the series, earning $218 million in the US and over $422 million worldwide. The original Sonic the Hedgehog movie surprised everyone by bringing in $148 million domestically and $319 million globally. The second film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, continued the trend, earning $190 million in the US and $405 million worldwide.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movies are based on a popular video game series originally created by Sega developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara. The games follow Sonic, a famously fast character, as he battles the villain Doctor Eggman. While the series is most recognized for its classic platforming games made by Sonic Team, it’s grown to include racing, fighting, sports, and party games developed by various studios.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog game came out in 1991 for the Sega Genesis and quickly became a hit. It played a big role in making Sega a leading gaming company in the early 1990s. After the first game, Sega Technical Institute created several sequels, including the spin-off title, Sonic Spinball.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will premiere in theaters on March 19, 2027.
