Hugh Jackman has become synonymous with Wolverine since first portraying the character on screen in 2000, though some of his appearances have been more successful than others. Wolverine is instantly recognizable thanks to his iconic look, which includes a winged mask, bright costumes, and prominent metal claws.
The comic book Wolverine is typically depicted as being somewhat short, with long, messy hair, prominent sideburns, and a constantly frowning expression. Though Hugh Jackman’s portrayal kept some of those elements, his appearance has generally been quite different from how the character looks in the comics.
Even so, Hugh Jackman became so beloved in the role of Wolverine that he’s the only actor who’s ever truly been Wolverine for the X-Men franchise. Marvel Studios has even considered keeping him involved for future projects. Over more than 26 years playing the character in films, Jackman has had the opportunity to portray Wolverine in many different ways.
13. X-Men: Apocalypse: Weapon X
Hugh Jackman made a brief appearance in X-Men: Apocalypse that showed his character’s origins. Like a scene in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Logan was subjected to experiments in a lab. This appearance is notable because it closely follows the comic book version of how Logan received his Adamantium skeleton.
Although the costume is impressively accurate, it’s essentially just shorts, wires, and a headset. It doesn’t really resemble Wolverine’s typical battle gear, and it’s a stretch to even call it a ‘suit.’ It’s a neat, comic book-inspired design, but Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has worn many much better costumes over the years.
12. Deadpool & Wolverine: OId Man Logan
The movie Deadpool & Wolverine delivers exactly what fans have always wanted: a team-up of these two iconic characters, brought vividly to life from the comics. As a bonus, Hugh Jackman gets to showcase a fun tribute to Wolverine’s comic book history by wearing some of his most famous looks.
The Old Man Logan look is a recognizable choice, and it successfully references the popular comic book storyline by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. However, outside of the comics, it’s a bit simple. It doesn’t showcase Hugh Jackman’s features very well, and given that we’ve already seen this story adapted in the 2017 film, this version feels disappointing.
11. Deadpool & Wolverine: Patch
One comic book element that really stood out was Deadpool & Wolverine’s depiction of the ‘Patch’ costume. ‘Patch’ was a name Logan used while operating in the criminal haven of Madripoor, allowing him to stay hidden and become a familiar figure there.
Jackman’s Wolverine suit is clean, fashionable, and effective, but it’s also quite basic. While simplicity isn’t a flaw, it doesn’t stand out as much as some of the more elaborate and impressive designs, placing it towards the bottom of our ranking.
10. Deadpool & Wolverine: Age of Apocalypse
The Age of Apocalypse suit featured in Deadpool & Wolverine really showcases how creatively the writers have developed Wolverine’s character over time. It’s based on a memorable look from a storyline where Logan is a key figure fighting against Apocalypse in an alternate reality.
This version of the character features one hand, a striking blue and red outfit, and long, messy hair reminiscent of the 1980s. It’s a fantastic and creative design that stands out from previous versions, making it a worthy addition to this list.
9. X-Men
Hugh Jackman first played Wolverine in the 2000 film X-Men, directed by Bryan Singer. At first, Logan doesn’t want to join a group of mutants, but he eventually finds acceptance and a sense of belonging. When his new friends need help, Wolverine doesn’t hesitate to fight alongside them.
The leather suits in these movies are sometimes criticized for being quite different from the bright, colorful costumes in the comics. However, the filmmakers included clever details – like the yellow lining, triangular rib designs, and X-Men logos – that still make them a good translation to the big screen. Overall, the suits look good and successfully brought these characters to life in a realistic way.
8. Logan
We also highlighted the Old Man Logan costume from Deadpool & Wolverine, which stayed true to the comic books. However, the newer, more streamlined look of Logan feels like a much better fit for Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of the character.
The character’s straightforward black suit, combined with the touch of grey in his hair to show his age, powerfully enhances the story and makes this one of his best and most impactful designs throughout the series.
7. X-Men 2
In X-Men 2, Wolverine’s suit gets a noticeable update: a yellow ‘X’ across the chest. This detail is also added to the suits of many other X-Men, giving the team a more cohesive appearance and bringing their look closer to the classic comic books. The bold ‘X’ makes a strong visual statement and emphasizes the team’s identity.
It’s still primarily the black leather suit we know, but the addition of yellow really updates the look and makes it a fantastic, modern take on the classic Wolverine costume. I think it really works!
6. X-Men: The Last Stand
The X-Men’s costumes in The Last Stand feature a design very similar to those in X2, but with a more streamlined and detailed look, making them an improved version.
Okay, so it’s not reinventing the wheel, but they really nailed a look that worked for them. They took that initial success and just kept polishing it, improving it bit by bit. Honestly, it’s a huge step up from the last one, and I’d put it at number six on my list, easily.
5. X-Men: Days of Future Past: Lost Future Suit
In X-Men: Days of Future Past, the past and future X-Men teams came together in an exciting way, and Wolverine played a key role. Naturally, Hugh Jackman needed a new costume and was ready to play the character again.
This suit is designed for action, featuring a streamlined look compared to previous leather versions. Notably, it includes toned-down yellow and blue sleeves – a first for the live-action films – which are a nod to the character’s comic book roots. While not flawless, it’s the best of the superhero suits created for the Fox films.
4. The White Tank Top
While many of Wolverine’s costumes have beautifully captured the spirit of the comics, Hugh Jackman’s portrayal is instantly recognizable thanks to one signature style: the classic white tank top. This is arguably his most-worn outfit throughout the films, appearing in many of them.
While it might not jump off the comic book page, this is a fantastic portrayal on film. Hugh Jackman perfectly embodies Wolverine’s tough, muscular, and battle-ready nature.
