When people talk about the most successful movie franchises, like Harry Potter, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Star Wars, it’s easy to see why – they’ve all made huge amounts of money. However, one surprisingly profitable series that often gets overlooked is Step Up.
While the dance movie series didn’t reach the $1 billion mark, it was still incredibly successful financially. Each film was made with a low budget, which meant the franchise was very profitable. Plus, it launched the careers of several well-known actors, contributing to its overall success, even though it’s not often discussed now.
Step Up Was Filled With Commercial Hits
The Step Up movies have generally been successful at the box office. The first film, released in 2006, was made on a $12 million budget but earned over $114 million worldwide. Even though Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, who starred in the original, didn’t appear in the later films, those sequels also did well.
The movie Step Up 2: The Streets earned about $150 million despite costing only $17 million to make. Step Up 3D did even better, bringing in nearly $160 million with a $30 million budget, thanks to its use of 3D technology. Even the fifth movie in the series was considered successful, earning around $86 million.
It’s rare for a movie series to earn over $651 million from six films and then fade from public attention. Dance movies, as a genre, aren’t as popular as they once were. However, fans of Step Up still have plenty to enjoy when revisiting the series.
The Step Up Franchise Lasted Longer Than Most People Realize
Even fans of the Step Up movies might be surprised by how long the series actually lasted. The first movie was released in 2006, and a new one came out every two years after that. Many people thought the series ended with Step Up: All In in 2014.
The Step Up series continued in 2019 with Step Up: Year of the Dance (also called Step Up China), a spin-off set in China. However, it didn’t gain much attention and wasn’t very popular with audiences.
Many people may not realize there was a TV series called Step Up: High Water. It originally aired on YouTube Red (the platform that launched Cobra Kai) for three seasons between 2018 and 2022, with the last season moving to Starz. Considering how popular the Step Up franchise has been, it’s somewhat surprising – and good to see – that it continued through 2022.
