Clark Gregg’s sci-fi series, Agents of SHIELD, is getting better with each season. While it’s part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s a slight difference to note. The show started as a direct continuation of the events in some of the most popular early Marvel movies, specifically those from Phase 1.
As the show went on, it started to tell stories that weren’t limited by what was happening in the Marvel movies. Now that new Marvel films are promising big shifts in the overall storyline, it makes you wonder how everything that’s already happened – including shows like Agents of SHIELD – will fit in.
Looking back at the seven seasons of the show, it’s clear how much Agents of SHIELD influenced the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and how consistently the show improved over time.
Agents Of SHIELD Is Aging Well
Rewatching Agents of SHIELD really highlights how well it holds up today. While the show was initially received positively, it often felt overshadowed by the other, more prominent projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, starting with season 2, Agents of SHIELD truly found its footing and became much stronger.
Many fans and critics agree that seasons 3 through 7 are among the best superhero shows ever made. They’re praised for their well-developed characters, powerful emotional moments, and smart use of Marvel comics. These seasons were so good, they even made people view the earlier seasons more positively.
Even when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was at its absolute best, I always felt Agents of SHIELD held its own – it was seriously good. Now, heading into 2026, the MCU has been a bit hit or miss, but that actually makes Agents of SHIELD look even better in retrospect. With so many new Marvel TV shows coming out that are either pretty bad or just underwhelming, Agents of SHIELD really stands the test of time – it’s aged incredibly well.
Why The MCU Never Acknowledged Agents Of SHIELD
With how popular Agents of SHIELD remains and the positive response it gets even now, many people wonder why the main Marvel Cinematic Universe never mentioned it. The reason is straightforward: when Agents of SHIELD started, Marvel didn’t consider its TV shows essential to the overall story.
The first few seasons of Agents of SHIELD were closely connected to the major events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, but this connection wasn’t returned. From 2008 to 2019, the MCU films mostly ignored the Marvel TV shows that were being made, including Agents of SHIELD and the Defenders series on Netflix. The movies missed chances to connect with the storylines happening on television.
As a huge Marvel fan, it was amazing to see things change in 2021 with the focus on Disney+. It finally meant Marvel Studios started really paying attention to what was happening in their TV shows and how it all connected to the big picture. Movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home and the new Daredevil: Born Again series proved they were taking the old Netflix shows seriously and making them official parts of the MCU – something we’d been hoping for!
Unfortunately, the Marvel TV show Agents of SHIELD still isn’t officially connected to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe as of 2026, despite being highly rated.
Will Any Agents Of SHIELD Characters Return In Avengers: Doomsday?
While it hasn’t happened yet, if the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever references the events of Agents of SHIELD, it will likely be through Avengers: Doomsday. Set to release in December 2026, this film will kick off the final chapter of the Multiverse Saga and, based on early marketing, will explore multiple universes within the MCU.
By its seventh season, Agents of SHIELD had become a show exploring multiple universes. The creators of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday could potentially incorporate characters and plotlines from Agents of SHIELD into the film. While many characters could fit, Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, seems like a particularly strong possibility.
Coulson was a key figure in the early years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the new film Avengers: Doomsday bringing back beloved characters like Thor, Captain America, and the X-Men to evoke that same feeling of nostalgia, it’s possible Clark Gregg could return as Coulson. After all, Agents of SHIELD successfully brought the character back after his appearance in The Avengers.
Another popular character hoping for a spot is Daisy Johnson, also known as Quake. She’s a fan favorite from the Agents of SHIELD TV show, and many viewers have wanted to see her appear in various Marvel Cinematic Universe projects over the past ten years. Bringing Quake into Avengers: Doomsday would be a particularly exciting move for fans of the series.
It’s hard to predict which characters from Agents of SHIELD might show up in Avengers: Doomsday. The Avengers movies already have so many heroes that anyone from SHIELD would probably only appear in quick cameos. This avoids the problem of introducing characters who don’t get enough screen time or a meaningful role in the story.
The upcoming movie Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for December 2027, might include characters from Agents of SHIELD. This sequel to Doomsday will largely take place within the remnants of the multiverse created by that film, hinting at the potential return of other characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As a fan, I’m really hoping we see some familiar faces from Agents of SHIELD pop up in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. That show has held up remarkably well over time, and honestly, those characters deserve a bit of recognition within the larger franchise – it would be a great way to give the series the narrative payoff it earned.
