Cameron jokingly advised viewers on how to avoid bathroom breaks during the film. He suggested eating lots of salty popcorn, explaining that salt reduces urine production – a trick he uses to get through long movies. He also lightheartedly recommended timing any necessary trips to the restroom for the later part of the second act, and then ‘just run!’ He didn’t suggest any specific scene to leave during, only the credits.
Cameron believes that strategically timing bathroom breaks is actually part of what makes seeing a play enjoyable. He explained that the unique appeal of live theatre comes from its lack of pause capability, unlike streaming at home where viewers are in control and can stop whenever they need to.
Cameron explained that people enjoy the ease of watching things at home, but when they go to a movie theater, it’s for a different reason. They want to let go and fully immerse themselves in the experience, like being on a roller coaster – once it starts, you’re committed to the ride.
James Cameron Reveals Avatar: Fire & Ash’s ‘Roller Coaster’ Ride
While Cameron compared watching Avatar: Fire and Ash to being stuck on a thrilling, but inconvenient, roller-coaster, he emphasized the film’s emotional depth, especially compared to other Avatar movies. He explained that this installment takes viewers on a surprisingly dark and complex character journey, focusing on Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldaña. He described how the character experiences pain that transforms into anger, making her challenging and less immediately likable.
Cameron explained that the villain’s anger puts Spider, a character viewers already appreciate, in danger. He described Spider as the relatable human caught in the crossfire, and highlighted the tension this creates. Because we care about both characters, but they’re enemies, we’re now eager to see how the conflict unfolds.
Avatar: Fire & Ash will be released in theaters on Dec. 19.
