12 Renewed Sci-Fi Shows Coming Back For More Seasons In 2026 & Beyond

The most successful science fiction franchises seem to have limitless potential, constantly adding to their universes with fresh stories and characters. Series like Doctor Who and Star Trek have become cultural icons, with certain episodes or seasons deeply resonating with entire generations of viewers. However, not all sci-fi shows achieve this level of lasting impact.

As a sci-fi fanatic, it always breaks my heart when a promising show gets the axe. It seems like so many of the really devastating cancellations happen in our genre – often because a show doesn’t find the audience it deserves, or just gets tangled up in behind-the-scenes issues. But the good news is, there are some amazing sci-fi shows really breaking through right now, and I’m thrilled to say a lot of them are coming back for more! It’s a great time to be a sci-fi fan.

Alien: Earth

Season 2 Expected In 2027

The original Alien films are widely considered classics, but later sequels and spin-offs haven’t always lived up to that standard. The recent success of Alien: Romulus led to more spin-off projects, including Alien: Earth. While Alien: Earth introduces new story elements that significantly alter established lore, the show is compelling enough that fans are willing to overlook these changes to the Alien universe.

Though different in tone from other films and shows in the Alien franchise, Alien: Earth was well-received by critics, earning a 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it sets up potential storylines for the future. The show was renewed for a second season last year, and fans can likely expect it to premiere in 2027, depending on how long it takes to finish production.

Pluribus

Season 2 Expected In 2027 or 2028

From the start, Vince Gilligan’s sci-fi series Pluribus felt like something with long-term potential, and it deserved a chance to develop. Featuring a standout performance by Rhea Seehorn (known from Better Call Saul), the show became increasingly dark and suspenseful – quite a feat, given that it centers on individuals who are immune to a collective consciousness that otherwise brings everyone contentment.

Following the dramatic season 1 finale where Carol returns with a bomb, Karolina Wydra (who plays Zosia) shared some news about Pluribus season 2 during an interview with ScreenRant at Paleyfest. She said filming for the new season is likely to start later this year, with a release expected in fall 2027. The show won’t be released every year, so 2027 is a reasonable timeframe to expect it.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Season 4 Expected In 2026

Science fiction often pushes boundaries, tackling current events and inspiring new ideas, and Star Trek is a prime example. The latest season, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, was packed with a lot happening – each episode felt unique and continued the feel of the first season. However, the season proved divisive, with critics and viewers having mixed reactions.

Despite an 88% positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers were less enthusiastic, giving the show a 52% score. Reviewers thought it relied too heavily on pleasing existing fans instead of offering fresh ideas. Although some believe the show is finished, a strong fourth season – expected later this year – could still turn things around.

IT: Welcome to Derry

Season 2 Expected In 2027

Stephen King’s horror novel, IT, blends scary elements with science fiction, as the story involves secret government experiments and cosmic horror—a type of sci-fi. Like the frightening creature Pennywise, the book draws from multiple genres, even fantasy. The prequel, IT: Welcome to Derry, builds on this combination to create an even more disturbing and unsettling mood.

The new season of IT: Welcome to Derry will explore events further in the past, introducing new actors and versions of Pennywise we haven’t seen before. According to co-creator and executive producer Andy Muschietti, the second season will be even more ambitious than the first. Production is already underway, and it’s currently expected to be released in 2027.

Silo

Season 3 Expected In 2026

Apple TV+ has a reputation for giving science fiction shows time to find their audience, and that strategy has worked – the platform now boasts some of the best sci-fi on television. But season 3 will be crucial for Silo, as the show’s second season suffered from some noticeable pacing problems.

Starring Rebecca Ferguson (known from Dune), Silo takes place in a future where people live in a massive underground bunker after a disaster makes the surface of the Earth unlivable. The show’s third season, confirmed to arrive in 2026, will address some important unanswered questions and hopefully build on the show’s promise.

Foundation

Season 4 Expected In 2027

Apple TV+’s Foundation is a standout sci-fi series that might not have thrived elsewhere. It breaks traditional storytelling norms but still earns high praise, with an 87% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and generally excellent reviews. Based on Isaac Asimov’s famously difficult-to-adapt book, the show successfully brings the complex story to life on screen.

The show centers on a community of humans forced into exile, dedicated to safeguarding all of humanity’s collective knowledge. Known for its grand scale and long time jumps between seasons, Foundation is considered one of the most ambitious science fiction series ever made. The upcoming season promises to be even bigger, with reports indicating the show will explore “a whole new dimension.”

Fallout

Season 3 Expected In 2027

As a critic, I’ve seen a lot of video game adaptations fall flat, but Amazon’s Fallout is genuinely something special – easily the best we’ve had this century. What’s so surprising is it doesn’t try to directly retell a story from the games. Instead, it perfectly captures what makes Fallout, well, Fallout – the unique tone, the incredible visual style, and the overall feeling of exploring that wasteland. It’s an adaptation that understands what fans love about the source material, and that’s a huge win.

The TV show Fallout is a hit with both critics and viewers, earning a 96% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A key to its success is the excellent casting, particularly Walton Goggins’s outstanding performance as The Ghoul. Because there are many Fallout video games to draw from, the show has plenty of material for future seasons, and season 3, anticipated in 2027, will include elements fans of the games have been hoping to see.

Paradise

Season 3 Expected In 2027

The popular sci-fi series Paradise has earned high praise, even from Stephen King, who particularly liked the strong performances, well-constructed plot, and especially the witty, original dialogue. Its excellent first two seasons clearly impressed Hulu, leading to a renewal before the second season had even finished airing.

I’m so excited! Even though Season 2 just finished at the end of March, I’m hearing that they’ve already started filming Season 3! Everyone’s been calling this show the new Lost because it’s full of really complex, connected mysteries. The creator, Dan Fogelman, always had a three-season plan, so it sounds like Season 3 might be a huge, satisfying conclusion to everything. I can’t wait to see how it all wraps up!
