It’s widely known that many Game of Thrones fans were disappointed with the final season. While I’m slightly more forgiving than most, even I admit Season 8 had significant problems. Fans continue to debate who’s to blame, and a recent social media post accusing George R.R. Martin sparked a lot of backlash from dedicated viewers.
The discussion began a few days ago on Reddit’s Unpopular Opinion forum. A user posted that a well-known author negatively impacted the show because they never completed the book series it was based on. The user explained that the show’s creators, David Benioff and DB Weiss, agreed to adapt an existing story, but since the author didn’t finish writing it, they were forced to create their own ending, which the user believed is significantly more challenging.
The idea seems logical when you first hear it. For years, fans have expressed frustration with how long it’s taking George R.R. Martin to finish his books, especially since the popular HBO series adapted from his work concluded before the book series was complete. However, a huge amount of online discussion – hundreds of comments and thousands of reactions – reveals that many dedicated fans actually disagree with this sentiment.
Many people are hesitant to criticize George R.R. Martin, and a major reason seems to be the source material – his books. Fans have noted that the show, Game of Thrones, adapted less and less of the books as it went on. While the first two seasons closely followed Martin’s writing, the show began to deviate significantly, particularly from Season 5 onward. One comment highlighting this point received nearly 1,000 likes.
That argument doesn’t hold up when you consider the later books, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons. It’s obvious the showrunners didn’t use those books at all for seasons five and six. They had the source material available, but chose to go in a different direction. So it’s unlikely that having the remaining books would have made any difference.
One problem with the show was its speed and the number of episodes. As a big Game of Thrones fan, I was really bothered by how quickly the story moved, particularly in the final two seasons. It felt like the creators were hurrying to finish the series, likely because they were moving on to work on Star Wars films.
I wasn’t upset with what happened in the ending, even though I still dislike the storyline with Bran. My main issue was how rushed everything felt. The earlier seasons took their time, letting you connect with the characters and understand their motivations. While the later seasons had some character development and foreshadowing, it was crammed in between too many quick events. Here’s what another viewer had to say…
They chose to end it fast, which was a mistake. The story could have been much better if they’d spent more time developing the plot and characters, even without changing the core storyline.
I’ve been following the discussions, and it’s interesting. Most fans really defended George R.R. Martin, saying he wasn’t at fault for how things turned out. But there was definitely a noticeable group who weren’t afraid to criticize him a little. Everyone seems to agree that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were mostly to blame for the show’s problems, but a lot of people pointed out that Martin’s books have been taking forever to finish. Some think the complexity of the plot is the reason for the delay, while others believe he might never actually finish them, suggesting the story is meant to be endless, like life itself.
I don’t dwell on the issues with Season 8; I choose to focus on what I loved about the show. The first six seasons were truly exceptional – the characters, the detailed world, and the captivating storylines were unlike anything else on TV. Plus, I’m really enjoying the new spin-off, House of the Dragon, despite it also seeming to have a limited number of episodes. That success is a testament to George RR Martin and the entire team, including showrunners Benioff and Weiss.
