For decades, chase scenes have been a common feature in TV shows, appearing in all sorts of genres. While some are memorable, others fall flat. But in late October 2022, one fantasy series delivered a chase scene so expertly crafted that it instantly became one of the best ever filmed. Three years later, it remains unmatched – no other action sequence has quite captured the same thrilling energy in those four minutes.
As a movie reviewer, I’ve seen a lot of chase scenes, and a truly great one needs more than just fast cars and frantic running. It needs to look good, have enough length to feel satisfying, and make me care about why anyone is chasing anyone else. But the best chase scenes? They actually move the story forward, instead of just being there for the spectacle. That’s what the Season 1 finale of House of the Dragon delivered – a chase scene that wasn’t just thrilling, but genuinely important to what was happening.
Aemond & Lucerys’ Dragonback Chase Scene Is Still the Best in TV History
Let me be clear: I’m not saying this is the greatest TV scene of all time – that would be a huge exaggeration. Chase scenes are a special case, and deserve their own evaluation. However, the chase sequence in the first season finale of House of the Dragon is easily the best of its kind. Generally, I don’t find chase scenes very engaging; they usually just create a bit of mild tension about whether the main character will be okay. Because of this, I often wish they’d end quickly so the story can move forward. This isn’t always true, but it’s a common reaction for me.
From the moment Lucerys Velaryon soared into the storm on Arrax, I was completely hooked, knowing we were about to witness something incredible: a dragon chase! The idea itself was amazing, but the way it was filmed was just breathtaking. I found myself practically glued to the screen, watching Vhagar loom over Lucerys and Arrax as they desperately tried to escape. I genuinely felt like something terrible was going to happen, and the stakes felt incredibly high. When Lucerys and Arrax were brutally taken down, it finally delivered what so many other shows don’t – the death of a character who truly mattered. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better chase scene on television, and I doubt I ever will.
‘House of the Dragon’ Saved This Scene for the Perfect Time

By the end of House of the Dragon‘s first season, the conflict between the Targaryen and Velaryon families – and all their allies – was at its absolute worst. However, despite all the growing drama, it felt like there were no significant consequences for anyone involved. Given that Game of Thrones, the show this series spun off from, was known for unexpectedly killing off characters, House of the Dragon had felt surprisingly restrained – until the four-minute chase scene between Aemond and Luke, which quickly changed everything.
I have to admit, as heartbreaking as it was, Luke’s death felt like a turning point for House of the Dragon. It was a stark reminder that this show exists in the same dangerous world as Game of Thrones, where no one is truly safe. For a while, it felt like all politics and complicated family relationships, but suddenly, the show started making us feel the consequences of caring about these characters. It sounded risky, but Game of Thrones showed us that could be amazing. Honestly, Luke’s death – even though it seemed almost accidental, with Aemond just playing with him – really kicked the plot into gear when it was starting to slow down. Looking ahead to Season 3, it’s clear that dragonback chase scene was exactly what House of the Dragon needed, and I’m grateful for the impact it had.
