Whether you grew up with the original or are discovering it now, Scooby-Doo continues to be a fan favorite. Recently, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, released 24 years ago, has become very popular on the free streaming platform Tubi.
Currently, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed is the most popular movie on Tubi in the U.S., according to Flix Patrol. It’s taken the No. 1 spot from the 1987 action film Predator, which is now in second place.
The movie Scooby-Doo 2 is performing better than several well-known classics, including Saving Private Ryan at number 3, Goodfellas at number 9, and The Rock at number 5. Rounding out the Top 10 for April 28th are Blood and Bone at number 4, Where the Crawdads Sing at number 6, The Predator 2 at number 7, Queen of the Damned at number 8, and Ever After: A Cinderella Story at number 10.
Mystery Inc.’s Most Notorious Villains Are Unleashed in Scooby-Doo 2
Following the 2002 movie Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed was directed by Raja Gosnell and written by James Gunn. Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Linda Cardellini, and Matthew Lillard reprised their roles as Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy, respectively, from the first film. Neil Fanning once again provided the voice for Scooby-Doo.
In Monster Unleashed, the Mystery Inc. gang finds themselves in hot water when a new villain starts releasing monsters they’ve previously captured all over Coolsville. To clear their names and save the town, they have to figure out who’s behind the chaos. Meanwhile, Shaggy and Scooby are determined to show everyone they can be helpful detectives too.
Okay, so Monsters Unleashed… let’s be honest, critics weren’t exactly showering it with praise, much like the first film. But audiences showed up, and it made a decent $181 million globally. The disappointing part? Warner Bros. didn’t see enough profit in that number to greenlight the third movie they had planned. It’s a shame, because it seemed like they had ideas for where to take the story, but unfortunately, it just didn’t perform well enough to warrant a continuation of the franchise.
New Live-Action Scooby-Doo Project in Production for Netflix
The series began with Monsters Unleashed. The following two movies, Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins (2009) and its sequel Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster (2010), were shown on Cartoon Network. Later, Daphne & Velma (2018) was released as a direct-to-video film.
After a gap of eight years since the last live-action movie, Daphne & Velma, the Scooby-Doo series is coming back to life with a new show on Netflix. Called Scooby-Doo: Origins, this eight-episode series will tell the story of how the Mystery Incorporated team first came together.
Netflix announced the start of filming for a new project earlier this week and shared a first-look photo. The picture revealed Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones. Scooby-Doo wasn’t visible in the photo, though a paw print on a crate hinted at his presence as the four friends peeked out from behind it.
Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed is currently streaming on Tubi.
