2026 looks like a great year for movies based on video games. With The Super Mario Bros. Movie being a huge success, people are eager to see what’s coming next. Several exciting video game adaptations are planned for release in 2026.
Despite earning slightly less than its predecessor, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) has already become a huge box office hit, grossing over $830 million worldwide. Fans are loving the film too, as evidenced by its 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter and a ‘Verified Hot’ rating. This success paves the way for three more video game movies coming out later this year, all hoping to achieve similar results.
Mortal Kombat II Introduces Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage to the World
Coming this year after The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mortal Kombat II is set to release in theaters on May 8, 2026. Despite the title, this will actually be the fourth Mortal Kombat movie. The films are based on the popular Mortal Kombat fighting game series. The 2021 Mortal Kombat film rebooted the series, following the original 1995 Mortal Kombat movie and its sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997).
The Mortal Kombat movies from the ’90s weren’t known for their quality; they were mostly remembered for being intentionally silly and over-the-top. Thankfully, the 2021 film gave fans of the video game a much better live-action adaptation, and its success led to a sequel.
The trailer for Mortal Kombat II mainly introduces Johnny Cage, a popular fighter in the series, and shows him joining Earthrealm’s champions. These champions must battle each other to oppose the cruel reign of Shao Kahn. Karl Urban portrays Johnny Cage, a Hollywood actor who performs his own martial arts stunts, as he confronts incredibly powerful and mysterious opponents, which is generating a lot of excitement among fans.
Street Fighter is Mortal Kombat II’s Biggest Competition
The upcoming film Street Fighter (2026) is an action-adventure movie based on the popular Capcom video game series. It’s expected to compete with the Mortal Kombat II film, as both are based on hugely popular fighting game franchises. While these two movies are quite different in style, they will likely be compared to each other.
The new film is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 16, 2026, and will be the last video game movie of the year. It centers on Ryu and Ken, longtime friends and rivals, who find themselves distanced from each other. They are reunited by the skilled and well-known fighter, Chun-Li.
Chun-Li brings Ryu and Ken on board for the World Warrior Tournament, a martial arts competition that offers a chance to battle a powerful foe. The journey won’t be easy, as they’ll face challenges beyond just their opponents. Luckily, the preview suggests the adaptation will capture the fun and lighthearted spirit of the original video games, giving fans reason to be optimistic.
Fans Are Hoping Zach Cregger Will Finally Get Resident Evil Right
Of all the video game movies and shows coming out this year, the Resident Evil adaptation (2026) is arguably the biggest gamble, given the series’ history of unsuccessful attempts. Resident Evil is a hugely influential game, often considered the originator of the survival horror genre, and many modern games have been inspired by it. The series began in 1996 and remains popular today, with the latest installment, Resident Evil Requiem (also known as Resident Evil 9), quickly becoming one of the best-selling games in the franchise after its release on February 27, 2026.
The Resident Evil video game series is arguably the most frequently adapted into movies and TV shows in Hollywood. Numerous attempts have been made, from earlier films to the 2021 movie Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and the 2022 Netflix series. However, none of these adaptations have quite managed to recreate the chilling atmosphere of the original games. Even the films directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, despite their popularity, don’t really feel like faithful adaptations of the source material.
Zach Cregger, known for directing the horror hits Barbarian (2022) and the well-received Weapons (2025), is directing the upcoming Resident Evil adaptation. While the movie is scheduled for release on September 18, 2026, fans are still waiting for the first official trailer.
The upcoming film promises to respect the established story, world, and scary atmosphere of Resident Evil, but it also introduces a new character. While fans are hopeful, they’re also wary, remembering that the last time a movie added a character not from the original games, it led to six films focused on Milla Jovovich’s character, Alice, which sidelined the characters fans loved. Whether this new movie will finally break the cycle of disappointing Resident Evil adaptations remains to be seen.
