There’s a new movie coming to Netflix this summer, right in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Netflix revealed the movie on April 22, 2026, sharing a trailer and official announcement. The 2026 World Cup kicks off on June 11th, and will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This is the first time three nations have ever co-hosted the tournament, and the opening game is currently scheduled to be played in Mexico City.
On June 5, 2026, Netflix will release México 86, a comedy-drama directed by Gabriel Ripstein and starring Diego Luna. The film follows Martín de la Torre (Luna) and the story of how Mexico secured the right to host the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Netflix calls the movie a tale of “audacity, madness, and pure Mexican ingenuity.”
The trailer has already been viewed over 500,000 times and features Martín de la Torre explaining why bringing the 1986 World Cup to Mexico was so important. It shows his efforts to collaborate with Emilio Azcárraga – portrayed by Daniel Giménez Cacho and known as “The most powerful man in Mexico.”
In the preview, Martín urges Azcárraga to imagine the positive impact of Mexico being the first nation to host the World Cup twice, explaining it would significantly raise the country’s profile. He later becomes president of Mexico’s football federation, giving him the ability to work towards bringing the 1986 World Cup to Mexico – a second time for the country.
Luna is a great fit for this role because she’s experienced playing characters who deal with complex relationships and power dynamics, as seen in projects like Y Tu Mamá También, Narcos: Mexico, and Andor. Similarly, in México 86, her character, Martín, is navigating a challenging system—this time, the political and corporate forces behind Mexico’s attempt to host the 1986 World Cup.
I’ve seen some early footage, and this film is a really interesting mix of satire, political commentary, and just plain absurdity. Netflix is positioning it around a Mexican bureaucrat named Martín, and apparently, he finds himself in a wild situation. He’s tasked with getting Mexico to host a big event, but to do it, he has to bend – and maybe even break – a lot of rules, constantly walking a tightrope and risking everything. It sounds like a chaotic and funny ride!
Ripstein not only directed the film but also collaborated with Daniel Krauze on writing the screenplay. The movie features a talented cast, including Karla Souza, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Álvaro Guerrero, Andrés De León, and Diana Sedano, alongside Gael García Bernal.
Releasing this movie right before the World Cup is a smart move, mirroring a trend in the entertainment industry. Similar shows, like Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Hard Knocks, have gained popularity by launching shortly before their related events begin.
México 86 will be available to stream on Netflix on June 5.
