Fans of The Legend of Zelda are used to being let down. Whether it’s long waits for new games or remakes that never come, the popular Nintendo series has often left players feeling frustrated. But nothing upsets the fanbase more than canceled games, and the most painful cancellation of all was a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
It’s true – Nintendo actually considered making a sequel to Twilight Princess after the game was a big hit. With the new Nintendo Wii about to launch, company leaders wanted to see what the console could do. The Legend of Zelda series was very popular at the time, so they looked to Twilight Princess as a good project. Ultimately, Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s lead developer, decided a spin-off game would be perfect for showcasing the Wii’s capabilities.
Miyamoto’s initial ideas for a follow-up didn’t quite pan out as fans expected. While Twilight Princess never received a direct sequel, The Legend of Zelda franchise still got a new game – Link’s Crossbow Training. This unexpected spin-off left many players surprised and confused.
What Happened To Zelda: Twilight Princess 2?
It’s difficult to picture how the Legend of Zelda series would be now if a sequel to Twilight Princess had been made. At one point, Shigeru Miyamoto and his team were actively trying to create one. Nintendo executives hoped to expand the world of Twilight Princess with a side story, similar to how Majora’s Mask followed Ocarina of Time. Miyamoto envisioned this spin-off taking place within the Twilight Princess universe, reusing assets and established lore as a starting point. Although the team began developing a story for the sequel, the project was ultimately never completed.
So, what caused the project to go off track? It started with the Wii’s unique motion controls. Shigeru Miyamoto, a big fan of first-person shooter games, influenced Nintendo to focus on showcasing the Wii’s technical capabilities. He asked the team working on the next Legend of Zelda game to integrate the Wii Zapper gun into the sequel. They began developing an ambitious story that would highlight the console’s features with motion controls. However, Miyamoto later changed his vision for the Zelda game.
Instead of making a large, expansive Zelda game, Miyamoto asked the team to create something smaller and different. He wanted them to focus on a shooting game, played from a first- or third-person perspective, and designed to be used with the Wii Zapper. The levels were intended to be short and self-contained. This change in direction surprised and frustrated the development team. As Miyamoto explained in a 2008 interview, it felt like they had to abandon all the ideas they’d been working on up to that point – this ultimately became Link’s Crossbow Training.
After receiving new instructions, the team started brainstorming how to realize Miyamoto’s ideas. Plans for a sequel to Twilight Princess were quietly cancelled as the team shifted focus to create a Zelda game designed for group play. Ultimately, the potential sequel never really got off the ground.
Link’s Crossbow Training Sure Is a Game
When development wrapped up, Nintendo released Link’s Crossbow Training, a game that continues to puzzle players. It had the potential to be a proper sequel to Twilight Princess, but internal decisions resulted in it becoming little more than a showcase for a new accessory. The game was designed to sell the Wii Zapper, but it didn’t really enhance the experience. Many reviewers actually found the standard Wii Remote to be a better choice, offering more accurate aiming and control.
Link’s Crossbow Training is an enjoyable game for multiplayer, but it’s ultimately a disappointment considering its potential within the Legend of Zelda series. It could have really showcased the Wii’s motion controls, but last-minute decisions by Miyamoto led to a less ambitious final product, leaving players wanting more. It’s hard not to wonder what a proper sequel to Twilight Princess could have been – it likely would have been fantastic.
