‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Creators on Bullseye’s Mindset After Killing Major Character [Exclusive]

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is now available, continuing Matt Murdock’s story within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After previously airing on Netflix, Born Again is now officially part of the larger MCU and features the return of several of Matt Murdock’s classic foes, bringing new chaos to Hell’s Kitchen. A major focus of this season is the aftermath of a shocking event from the very first episode: Bullseye’s killing of Foggy Nelson.

Bullseye continues to be a formidable villain in Season 2, demonstrated by his ability to defeat dozens of officers from the Anti-Vigilante Task Force in a single episode. Although he shows no remorse for killing Foggy at Vanessa Fisk’s request, his connection with the main hero, Matt Murdock, has become surprisingly complex. This dynamic promises an intense conflict between them as the season progresses, with the show’s creators recently revealing more about their plans for the finale.

I was reading an interview with the showrunner of Daredevil: Born Again, Dario Scardapane, and a Marvel exec, Sana Amanat, and they were talking about the return of Bullseye. Apparently, they’re really leaning into his chaotic side! Scardapane described him as someone who, after being called a vigilante, actually tries to do good – which, naturally, leads to all sorts of crazy situations. It sounds like Daredevil and Bullseye will have a lot of conflict, and will be forced to find some common ground despite their differences.

I’ve always seen Bullseye as someone who just throws everything into disarray, and honestly, that’s what makes him so fun! The writers came up with this great angle: in a world where vigilantes are the bad guys, Bullseye actually thinks he’s one of the good ones. So he sets out to do what he believes is right, which, predictably, leads to a lot of awful situations. It’s interesting because these initially lighter, almost comical moments eventually lead to some really intense and serious conflicts, especially with Daredevil. They really have to confront each other and figure things out.

Amanat explained the team had always planned to delve into Bullseye’s character, particularly exploring the reasons behind his actions after killing Foggy. That event has its own dedicated storyline within the series, and now Bullseye appears to be attempting to atone for it, adding another layer of unpredictability to the already chaotic world he’s created.

We’ve always liked the character of Bullseye and that’s why we brought him back in Season 1. We wanted to explore his complexities, especially considering he killed Foggy. The reasons behind that act are a story in themselves, but it’s also compelling to see him trying to atone for it, in his own way. Beyond that, his unpredictable nature – how he both builds order and creates chaos – is really fascinating. In fact, his idea of order is chaos.

The rest of the season promises to be full of surprises, particularly regarding the complex dynamic between Benjamin Poindexter and Matt Murdock. Despite showing no remorse for his actions, Bullseye appears to be attempting some form of redemption, potentially revealing his motives later on. With Jessica Jones set to appear in Season 2 and Wilson Fisk still in power, New York is headed for major conflict, setting up what could be the show’s most gripping storylines yet.

The first five episodes of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 are available to watch on Disney+, with new episodes dropping every Tuesday at 6 PM Pacific Time or 9 PM Eastern Time.
