Season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will now premiere towards the end of 2026, slightly earlier than initially expected. While the new premiere window is a positive development for the Prime Video series, it’s still facing strong competition from Warner Bros. and HBO. Previously, it was thought the season wouldn’t arrive until 2027, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, production is on track for a late 2026 release.
It’s great to hear this news, especially with the second season of Rings of Power just finishing up in 2024. A premiere in 2027 would have been a long wait for viewers, considering other popular fantasy shows like House of the Dragon usually return every two years. While Rings of Power might have been able to get away with a longer gap if it was a hit with audiences, it’s been pretty controversial, currently with a 48% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Amazon needs to keep the momentum going and can’t risk further delays.
Even with the move to a 2026 release, Rings of Power season 3 still faces challenges. This new timeframe could be just as difficult as the original 2027 date, and might actually create more problems for Prime Video. 2026 is already a competitive year for fantasy shows, particularly with what Warner Bros Discovery has planned.
Warner Bros Discovery Has Rings Of Power Season 3 Surrounded By Other Fantasy Releases
It’s not surprising to hear that season 3 of Rings of Power will now premiere in 2026 instead of 2027. HBO recently made a similar announcement about its Harry Potter TV series. Originally, Warner Bros. Discovery said the first season of Harry Potter wouldn’t arrive until mid-2027, but the trailer revealed a Christmas Day 2026 release. This means Rings of Power season 3 and the new Harry Potter show will likely be airing around the same time on Prime Video and HBO.
As a huge fantasy fan, I’ve always known there’s a lot of overlap between the people who love Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. That’s why I think Amazon taking on HBO’s new Harry Potter series is a really big gamble. Even if Rings of Power gets a head start, all the buzz for Harry Potter when it eventually drops will probably overshadow anything Rings of Power does after its first season. I guess Amazon figured launching Rings of Power before Harry Potter was the slightly less risky move, but they’re still following up House of the Dragon season 3, which is also a Warner Bros. Discovery show. It’s a crowded space, and it’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out!
Both House of the Dragon and Harry Potter are already competing with The Rings of Power, and things are about to get more challenging. Warner Bros Discovery is bringing back the Lord of the Rings movies, with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum scheduled for 2027. This new film could significantly impact Prime Video’s Rings of Power. It appears Warner Bros Discovery is consistently positioned to challenge Prime’s series, no matter what direction it takes.
An Early 2027 Premiere Date Might Have Been A Safer Bet For Rings Of Power Season 3
It’s a tough situation for Rings of Power either way. But releasing season 3 around the end of March 2027 would have given it the most breathing room from other shows on Warner Bros. Discovery. By then, the first season of the Harry Potter series would have finished airing, potentially attracting fantasy fans looking for something new. Also, season 3 of House of the Dragon would have already finished its run, allowing Prime Video to truly stand apart from the HBO series for the first time.
With The Hunt for Gollum not scheduled to release until December 17, 2027, there’s time for Amazon’s Rings of Power to establish its own identity. However, because both shows are part of The Lord of the Rings franchise, critics will inevitably compare them. Warner Bros. traditionally releases Lord of the Rings films during the holidays, and The Hunt for Gollum is following suit. Rings of Power might be better off avoiding that holiday release pattern altogether, making the 2027 release window a potentially safer option.
Can Rings Of Power Possibly Survive The War With Warner Bros?
Warner Bros. Discovery has become a major force in fantasy entertainment. For years, the company has been known for franchises like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, and recent movies and TV shows have only strengthened that reputation. After acquiring HBO, WBD now also produces Game of Thrones and its spin-offs, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, with even more shows and a movie about Aegon the Conqueror on the way. With all this competition, can Amazon’s Rings of Power really succeed?
As a huge fantasy fan, I get why Prime Video went all-in on Rings of Power. It’s seriously the most expensive fantasy show ever made, and honestly, it felt like they had to spend that much to even compete with everything else out there. But so far, the money hasn’t really translated into something that feels truly special or different. I think a smarter release strategy could help, but ultimately, Amazon needs to deliver something genuinely amazing with the next season to really make Rings of Power shine.
The planned 2026 release date for season 3 of Rings of Power could suggest Prime Video is very confident in the new season. Alternatively, it might mean they’re pushing it out before it’s fully ready. Either way, the show still has a chance to improve and become successful. However, it’s uncertain if it will ever reach the same level of popularity as other fantasy series.
