Despite being a cultural phenomenon for over forty years, this beloved space saga remains incredibly popular. It’s grown so large that it now focuses on the backstories of its original characters. Because Jedi and Sith are already exceptionally powerful, it’s become challenging to determine who is the strongest among them.

Because the Force has always been a somewhat mysterious and undefined power, it’s hard to use it as the sole measure of strength. But as seen throughout Star Wars, a character’s abilities can come from many different places in that galaxy, not just the Force itself.

General Grievous Was a Master Swordsman

General Grievous is a surprisingly overlooked figure, but he’s arguably one of the most dangerous fighters in the galaxy. He emerged as a Separatist leader during the Clone Wars, driven by a relentless passion for battle. Thanks to cybernetic enhancements, he could skillfully use four lightsabers simultaneously – each one taken from a Jedi Knight he had defeated.

General Grievous wasn’t just physically strong; he led the entire Separatist droid army, with millions of robotic soldiers instantly under his command. Even without weapons, he had a massive, deadly force backing him up. He was a highly skilled fighter, personally trained in lightsaber combat by Count Dooku. Though his impact wasn’t lasting, Grievous remains one of the most effective Jedi hunters in history and deserves recognition for that.

The Grand Inquisitor Was a Powerful Jedi Hunter

The Grand Inquisitor began as a simple guard at the Jedi Temple, but was actually a Sith agent working in complete secrecy. He was incredibly skilled at hiding his true nature, fooling even the most powerful Jedi Masters. When the Empire took control, he revealed himself as a Sith and was appointed Grand Inquisitor, tasked with tracking down and eliminating any surviving Jedi after the events of Order 66.

Leading a team of Inquisitors and wielding their unique spinning lightsabers, the Grand Inquisitor killed many Jedi who had survived the initial purge, including the well-known Luminara Unduli. He then coldly used her remains as bait, hoping to draw out other Jedi attempting to save her. The Grand Inquisitor was a dangerous fighter, famous for surprising even experienced Jedi with his unusual lightsaber and brutal fighting style.

Asajj Ventress Held Her Own Against Several Jedi

Asajj Ventress is a character from the Star Wars saga. She was born on the planet Dathomir, a world torn apart by war, and belonged to a clan of witches called the Nightsisters. She lived long enough to be trained by a Jedi Master sent to Dathomir to establish peace. He taught her about the Force, hoping she would become a Jedi, but after he was killed by pirates, Ventress gave in to her anger and sadness, and turned to the Dark Side.

Asajj Ventress quickly caught the attention of Count Dooku, who trained her as his personal assassin. During the Clone Wars, she became famous for her fierce and unpredictable combat skills, often clashing with Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. She even developed a confident, though unofficial, rivalry with these two powerful Jedi. But when Dooku ultimately betrayed her, Ventress struck out on her own, eventually going so far as to rescue the Jedi she once fought as an enemy.

Count Dooku Was a Powerful Jedi and Sith

Originally trained as a Jedi under Yoda, Dooku grew frustrated with the widespread corruption he witnessed. He ultimately left the Jedi Order, returned to his home planet Serenno to reclaim his noble title as Count, and became the new apprentice of Darth Sidious, taking on the name Darth Tyrannus.

Dooku was a highly skilled strategist and lightsaber fighter even during his time as a Jedi. Becoming a Sith Lord only amplified these abilities, granting him new and dangerous powers. He was especially known for his powerful Force lightning, and could even turn attacks back on opponents using the same energy. Dooku proved his strength at the end of Attack of the Clones by effortlessly battling and defeating three experienced Jedi Masters within ten minutes, and even severing Anakin Skywalker’s arm in the process.

Grand Admiral Thrawn Was a Military Mind to Be Feared

Thrawn began as a highly skilled Chiss warrior, known for his brilliant tactics and unwavering commitment to defeating his opponents. He became a master of stealth and deception, even managing to eliminate an entire squad of stormtroopers undetected. Rather than face punishment, he cleverly convinced the Emperor that he was a valuable asset and deserved a position within the Imperial Navy.

Thrawn’s understanding of his opponents allowed him to rapidly become a high-ranking Grand Admiral during the Galactic Civil War. Though removed from the conflict by Ezra Bridger—who used mysterious space creatures called Purrgil to send Thrawn and his army to a different galaxy at the end of Star Wars Rebels—he remains a danger. As revealed in Ahsoka, Thrawn has formed an alliance with the Dathomiri, and together, they pose a continuing threat to the newly established New Republic.

Kanan Jarrus Was More Powerful Than He Realized

Caleb Dume became a Jedi Knight with limited formal training just as the Clone Wars began, forcing him to learn through experience. During the devastating Jedi Purge, his master, Depa Billaba, bravely sacrificed herself so he could escape. He then met smuggler Janus Kasmir, who helped him adopt a new identity – Kanan Jarrus – and conceal his Jedi abilities for nearly twenty years.

Kanan didn’t return to the ways of the Jedi until he joined the Rebellion and met Ezra Bridger. A skilled fighter capable of taking on entire groups of enemies alone, Kanan then trained Ezra and completed the trials to become a Jedi Knight. Even after Darth Maul blinded him, Kanan adapted, using the Force to heighten his other senses and become an even more effective fighter. Through this, he achieved a level of power comparable to many Jedi of the past.

Darth Maul Proved Just How Powerful He Was

Darth Maul first gained fame in The Phantom Menace with his impressive double-bladed lightsaber, battling Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Though he defeated Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan ultimately prevailed when Maul became overconfident. Everyone believed Maul was dead for more than ten years, until he reappeared in The Clone Wars alongside his brother, Savage Oppress, sporting a new set of robotic legs. He demonstrated his continued power by defeating numerous Jedi as he pursued his goals.

Darth Maul was an incredibly skilled fighter, but he wasn’t strong enough to satisfy Darth Sidious, who brutally killed Maul’s mother and brother. After disappearing for years, Maul reappeared in an ancient Sith temple. Driven by years of exile and a thirst for revenge, he managed to defeat the Jedi hunters sent after him. He seemed nearly impossible to kill, but his story ultimately ended with a final battle against Obi-Wan.

Avar Kriss Held Her Own Against the Nihil

During a time of crisis, Avar Kriss was central to the relief work following the Great Disaster – a hyperspace explosion caused by the Nihil. To prevent debris from destroying Hetzel Prime, she used her special connection to the Force, coordinating the Jedi and successfully saving the planet. This bravery resulted in her being promoted to Marshall of the Starlight Beacon.

As the leader of the Starlight Beacon, Avar Kriss coordinated Jedi missions exploring the Outer Rim and helped the Republic invite new systems to join. Her main focus was fighting the Nihil, a dangerous group causing chaos throughout the region. Though the Nihil successfully destroyed the Starlight Beacon, Avar has gone undercover, determined to finally defeat them.

Qui-Gon Jinn Was the Last True Jedi

Qui-Gon Jinn discovered a way to survive death as a Force ghost, a secret he revealed to Master Yoda through visions, and later to his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi. He was already a remarkably powerful Jedi before his death. Obi-Wan often said that Qui-Gon could have been a highly esteemed Jedi if he’d simply followed the Jedi Code, but Qui-Gon preferred to forge his own path and didn’t care much for rules.

Qui-Gon Jinn had a uniquely strong connection to the Force, allowing him to go beyond the strict rules of the Jedi Order. He was also a skilled fighter. Over the centuries, the Jedi had become complacent, as the Sith had been absent for so long, and their training had suffered. This meant even a young Sith could challenge an experienced Jedi Master. Despite this decline, Qui-Gon was able to fight Darth Maul to a standstill for a significant portion of two battles.

Mace Windu Was a Force to Be Reckoned with

Mace Windu was the Jedi Temple’s top lightsaber duelist and a highly skilled fighter. He played a key role in many important victories for the Republic during the Clone Wars, demonstrating both strategic thinking and Jedi wisdom. However, his intense focus and skill in combat sometimes threatened to lead him down a dangerous path toward the Dark Side.

To manage his tendency to become angry, Mace Windu developed a unique and controlled fighting style. He nearly ended the Clone Wars when he defeated Darth Sidious in a duel, but wasn’t able to deliver the final blow. Windu was a highly respected Jedi Master, and his influence continued to be felt for generations after his passing.
