Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Finally Made the Inquisitors Scary

After Disney bought Lucasfilm, one of their first projects was the animated series Star Wars: Rebels, set just before the original Star Wars movies. The show’s creators wanted powerful, lightsaber-using villains for the heroes to battle, but they didn’t want to disrupt the established storyline by showing other Sith Lords active at that time. Instead, they created the Inquisitors – Force-sensitive hunters trained by Darth Vader. Vader made sure these Inquisitors weren’t as powerful as true Sith Lords, so they wouldn’t challenge his or Emperor Palpatine’s authority.

As a fan, I always felt the Inquisitors in Star Wars were a bit underwhelming. They were supposed to be these frightening hunters, but they didn’t really come across that way, especially since we first met them in a show geared towards kids. They almost never actually showed anyone being killed, and their spinning lightsabers just felt silly. Later on, things like Jedi: Fallen Order, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Tales of the Empire tried to fix that, but it wasn’t until the newest series, Maul: Shadow Lord, that the Inquisitors finally felt as menacing as they were intended to be.

The First Brother Is Star Wars’ Most Fearsome Inquisitor

The fifth episode of Shadow Lord, titled “Inquisition,” features the Empire’s arrival on Janix and the hunt for Darth Maul, led by Marrok, a powerful Inquisitor known as the First Brother. While a ghostly version of Marrok appeared in Ahsoka controlled by the Nightsisters, Shadow Lord is the first time audiences see him actively working as an Inquisitor. The creators used various methods to make Marrok a more imposing figure than previous Inquisitors seen in both animated and live-action Star Wars projects.

When Marrok first appears, we see him through the eyes of Brander Lawson, an average person in the Star Wars galaxy. He’s presented as a terrifying figure, silently looming behind Brander like a villain in a horror movie, with evidence of past torture visible on the interrogation table. Unlike in shows like Rebels, where the Inquisitors fought relatively equal opponents, Brander and his son Rylee were completely outmatched by Marrok in Shadow Lord, only managing to survive thanks to good fortune and help from Jedi allies.

The episode also demonstrated Marrok’s cleverness by showing him actively assist in the search for Maul – a part of the Inquisitors’ hunt rarely seen in other Star Wars stories. Marrok went to the site of Maul’s fight with Eeko-Dio Daki and Devon Izara to piece together what happened. This careful, investigative work made it clear that no one could escape the Inquisitors’ notice.

Shadow Lord Finally Made the Inquisitors Feel Dangerous

In the sixth episode of Shadow Lord, “Night of the Hunted,” Marrok demonstrated significant combat ability. He successfully fought two separate battles against two opponents at once, first facing Daki and Devon, and then Devon and Maul. This is notable because, in Rebels, Inquisitors frequently lost fights even when they had a numbers advantage. Marrok’s skill stands out even more considering the strength of Daki and Maul compared to Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger from Rebels, who were .

Unlike most Inquisitors, Marrok kept his anger and pride in check. When he discovered Maul was more powerful than he thought – because Maul had teamed up with the Jedi – Marrok asked his master for guidance on what to do next.

Marrok, as the leading Inquisitor, was likely a highly skilled individual, and his success demonstrated the strength of the Inquisitorius as a whole. Fans are hoping the Eleventh Brother, featured in trailers for Shadow Lord, will be just as formidable.

Marrok’s appearance in Shadow Lord demonstrates a key benefit of long-lasting franchises like Star Wars. By featuring the Inquisitors in more stories, particularly Shadow Lord, the franchise is finally able to fully develop their original concept. Shadow Lord successfully transformed the Inquisitors into the truly frightening villains they were intended to be, making their earlier appearances in Star Wars feel more impactful and justified.
