DC’s Clayface Horror Movie Continues Trend Started by Superman

This October, a new DC movie will hit theaters with a frightening tale about a rising actor who suffers a disfiguring injury. Surprisingly, DC has cleverly connected this story to its other upcoming films, Superman and Supergirl.

The new trailer for Clayface introduced the film’s tagline: ‘Look Fear In the Face.’ This phrase isn’t just fitting for the villain; it’s connected to the taglines of other recent DC films starring Milly Alcock as Supergirl (‘Look Up’ and ‘Look Out’), suggesting a deliberate pattern within the DC Universe.

Clayface Brings Body Horror to James Gunn’s DCU

A new movie about Clayface will be released in theaters on October 23rd, just in time for Halloween. This is the first film from DC Studios focusing on the character, who is a favorite among Batman fans, though not widely known to the general public. Tom Rhys Harries stars as Clayface, and James Watkins directed the film.

The movie Clayface centers on Matt Hagen, a promising actor whose face is badly injured by a criminal. Desperate to save his career, Hagen seeks help from a strange scientist, but the treatment doesn’t turn out as he hoped.

Besides Jason Momoa as Hagen/Clayface, Naomi Ackie will play Dr. Caitlin Bates, a scientist who is also Hagen’s love interest. Max Minghella joins the cast as a Gotham City police detective who is dating Bates, which could create some romantic tension in the movie. Eddie Marsan, David Dencik, Nancy Carroll, and Joshua James are also part of the cast, though their roles haven’t been revealed yet.

Clayface Marks The DCU’s Third Theatrical Release

When Clayface comes out in theaters this October, it will be the third film in the new DC Universe. James Gunn started the DCU with Superman, planned for release in 2025, and Craig Gillespie and Ana Nogueira’s film is coming out on June 26th. Both James Gunn and Peter Safran are producing all three movies, and Matt Reeves and Lynn Haris, who worked on The Batman, are also producing Clayface.

Whether Supergirl or Clayface can continue the positive momentum remains to be seen. Superman, starring David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel after Henry Cavill, launched a fresh, more optimistic take on DC superhero movies. This new direction was well-received by viewers, and Superman succeeded in

Even if Supergirl or Clayface don’t perform as well as Superman in theaters, DC Studios is committed to making more superhero movies. A sequel to Superman, called Man of Tomorrow, is already planned for release on July 9, 2027, and films featuring Batman and Wonder Woman are also being developed.

Clayface arrives in theaters on Oct. 23, 2026.
