While The X-Files is a beloved science fiction classic, it wasn’t perfect – some of its more unusual episodes didn’t quite work, and fans didn’t appreciate the changes made in the reboot. Still, the show was incredibly innovative and really stretched the boundaries of what was possible on television.
Despite the show’s overall success, one episode continues to bother fans. “Teso Dos Bichos,” from Season 3, tried to combine a crime story with Native American culture, but many viewers felt it didn’t quite work. The episode felt poorly executed, making it hard for audiences to enjoy.
Teso Dos Bichos Had Several Rewrites and a Confusing Villain
In the eighteenth episode, “Teso Dos Bichos,” the story moves to Ecuador, where archaeologists are excavating a remote burial site. A worker discovers the remains of a female shaman and urgently asks the American team not to disturb her. However, Dr. Roosevelt dismisses the request and orders the remains to be sent back to Boston. That night, while the workers participate in a traditional ceremony, Roosevelt is suddenly and violently attacked by an unidentified creature.
When agents return to the US, they begin investigating a series of brutal murders where the victims’ bodies mysteriously disappear. A common link emerges: each victim was found near rats. To learn more, the agents venture into the city’s sewer system, exploring a hidden network of tunnels. There, they find the missing bodies, but are quickly confronted by aggressive feral cats protecting their territory, making the investigation dangerous.
Once Mulder and the team were safe, he explained that the spirit of the shaman had become a giant jaguar, and was attacking anyone connected to her burial remains. With the urn returned to its proper place, the shaman was finally able to find peace and stop the killings.
This isn’t the first instance where respect has been a theme. However, in ‘Teso Dos Bichos,’ things took a strange turn, turning a strong character into a collection of cute cats.
It’s no surprise this episode needed a lot of revisions. The main issue, though, is that it’s very deceptive. The story consistently leads viewers to believe the victims are being hunted by a jaguar, and a clear example of this is Dr. Craig Horning’s death.
The film cleverly uses the Jaguar emblem on a car to foreshadow a transformation. First, the camera focuses on it as a character exits the vehicle, and then again after his death, strongly suggesting he’s become a jaguar. However, the true villains aren’t a single powerful jaguar, but a surprising group: stray cats.
The show aimed to create a frightening atmosphere with these cats, particularly during the attack on Scully, but their small size makes them more cute than scary. This completely undermines the story’s tension and contradicts what viewers were led to believe from the start. The opening scene features a menacing jaguar, so replacing it with harmless house cats during the climax feels like a disappointing and anticlimactic twist.
The X-Files Cast Struggled on Set for Multiple Reasons
Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny both did a wonderful job portraying these fascinating agents early in their careers. However, viewers of “Teso Dos Bichos” often notice a sense of frustration or stagnation in both actors’ performances, which is understandable given the difficult conditions they faced during filming.
Gillian Anderson is severely allergic to cats, which made filming the last scenes quite challenging for her. This might explain why she appeared breathless and frustrated during those moments. And the cats themselves weren’t easy to work with – they didn’t follow directions and often either just sat there or caused chaos for everyone on set.
While these details might seem small, they can significantly impact a show when time and money are limited. Like director Kim Manners, the team found it challenging to create genuinely frightening scenes with the show’s supernatural creatures. Despite the valid criticisms of this episode, it’s evident the crew did their best given the tough conditions they were working under.
X-Files Fans Can Now See the Humor
Although viewers can easily watch the show from home, it’s easy to forget how challenging it was to make. The show lasted nine seasons, and filming each episode typically took eighteen days. Despite facing difficulties, like those shown in the episode “Teso Dos Bichos,” the crew always had to work quickly to stay on schedule. Because of this demanding pace, it’s understandable if some performances occasionally seem a little subdued.
Despite all the challenges – including numerous allergic reactions and uncooperative cats – the team was able to look back on the experience with humor, and some even received a memento. As a thank you for their hard work on this difficult episode, director Kim Manners purchased “Teso Dos Bichos Survivor” T-shirts for the crew. Ultimately, everyone pulled together to create a complete episode, despite everything that went wrong.
In the past, TV shows were typically made with at least 20 episodes per season. This is quite different from today, where viewers often wait years for a new season that might only have six or so episodes.
Even if this episode wasn’t very good or didn’t meet expectations, it didn’t really impact the overall show. Because it was a self-contained story and a new episode came out quickly, it was largely forgotten. Fans don’t let its troubled production affect their view of the series as a whole.
