Michael Jackson Biopic ‘Michael’ Debuts Low Rotten Tomatoes Score

I’ve been waiting for the Michael Jackson biopic for ages, and after hearing about all the reshoots, I’m so excited it’s finally coming out this week! Everyone involved seems amazing, and the buzz has been incredible. But, I just saw some early reviews, and honestly, it sounds like we should maybe keep our expectations in check. It’s a little disappointing, but I’m still going to see it!

Alonso Duralde of The Film Verdict complimented Antoine Fuqua’s direction in capturing Michael Jackson’s best musical performances, but ultimately found the movie lacking substance, even for a typical biopic. While not universally panned – MovieWeb gave it a 3.5/5 rating, praising the acting, visuals, and overall entertainment – the review noted a need for more depth. Essentially, the film seems like a fun experience for Michael Jackson fans, but viewers seeking a more profound story might be let down.

It’s not surprising that the film doesn’t fully explore the controversial side of the musician’s life. The movie had to be significantly reworked after its original ending – which dealt with the 1993 allegations of child sexual abuse – proved problematic. Apparently, the Jackson estate hadn’t considered a specific part of the settlement with Jordan Chandler. When the filmmakers started over, they appeared to remove any references to these claims from the finished film.

Despite mixed reviews, the new film about Michael is expected to be a box office hit, especially given how popular the trailers have been. Lionsgate is already planning potential sequels, according to Variety, which could explore later periods of Jackson’s life and address controversies that were left out of this first movie.
