As a big fan of thought-provoking sci-fi, I’m really urging anyone who hasn’t seen it to check out Alex Garland’s earlier film – it’s seriously underrated! Luckily, you can still stream it on Tubi completely free, but I don’t know how long that will last, so I’m making the most of it now.
The movie Dredd is set to leave Tubi soon, though an exact date hasn’t been announced. It will likely be removed around May 1st. Released in 2012, Dredd stars Karl Urban (from The Boys) as Judge Dredd, a law enforcer who handles all aspects of justice in the futuristic Mega-City One. He teams up with rookie Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) to take down a drug lord named Ma-Ma, played by Lena Headey (known from Game of Thrones).
Dredd’s Cyberpunk Story Was a Hit — But It Still Flopped at the Box Office
Despite strong reviews and positive audience reactions, the action-packed film Dredd didn’t perform well in theaters. While set in a huge and brutal world with a powerful protagonist, it only earned $41.5 million at the box office, despite costing between $30 and $45 million to make.
Beyond its budget troubles, Dredd received a lot of positive attention for its visuals, actors, and exciting action. However, some viewers felt the movie’s violence was excessive, and criticized how it adapted the Dredd comic book series. They pointed out that the film lacked the humor and social commentary often found in the original 2000 AD comics.
Even after more than ten years, Dredd still has an 80% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers also really liked it, with 72% positive reviews from over 100,000 ratings – which is quite a success for the film.
Critics generally agree that Dredd successfully portrays the iconic character in a compelling way on film. One review highlights how the movie’s explosive action, strong visual effects, and blend of satire and dark humor effectively capture the raw energy of the original source material.
Fans Hold Out Hope for More Judge Dredd Films
Although the movie Dredd wasn’t a box office success, its dedicated fans still hope for a sequel. The film has consistently sold well on DVD and Blu-ray, and with Hollywood’s current habit of reviving old favorites, a continuation of Dredd might finally happen.
Originally, the filmmakers envisioned a series of three Dredd movies, but they said the film would need to earn over $50 million at the box office for that to happen – which unfortunately didn’t occur. Despite this, Karl Urban has remained optimistic about a sequel over the years, and even mentioned in 2016 that discussions were underway about continuing the story on a streaming platform like Netflix or Amazon Prime.
Talk of a Judge Dredd TV series began in May 2017, with Karl Urban reportedly in discussions to reprise his role. However, development was paused in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of last year, plans were revived with Taika Waititi attached to direct and Drew Pearce (known for his work on Fast & Furious and Mission: Impossible) writing the script. It’s currently unclear whether the series will ultimately be made.
Dredd is now streaming for free on Tubi for a limited time.
