Sydney Sweeney is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about actresses today. She’s starred in popular and critically acclaimed projects like the HBO series Euphoria and The White Lotus, and the film Anyone but You. While she experienced some disappointments with movies like Madame Web, Eden, and Christy, her 2025 film has become a huge success, and is now proving popular in a new format.

Currently on Amazon Prime’s pay-per-view service, The Housemaid is the second most popular movie, surpassed only by the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel, Reminders of Him. This R-rated thriller is performing better than other films like the upcoming Wuthering Heights, GOAT, Send Help, and even Avatar: Fire and Ash.

The newest installment in the incredibly successful Avatar series, Avatar: Fire and Ash, continues the franchise’s box office dominance. The original Avatar film remains the highest-grossing movie ever made, earning $2.9 billion worldwide. Its 2022 sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, also performed exceptionally well, bringing in $2.3 billion. While not quite as profitable as the previous films, Avatar: Fire and Ash still proved to be a significant success, grossing $1.49 billion.

Sweeney’s film, The Housemaid, cost $35 million to make, meaning it needed to earn between $70 and $87.5 million in theaters to cover its costs. It didn’t just reach that goal, it far exceeded it, ultimately grossing $398 million worldwide. The film’s success in theaters and on demand is likely due to the strong positive reviews it received.

The thriller The Housemaid has been well-received, earning a 73% rating from critics and a remarkable 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. In a review for ScreenRant, critic Graeme Guttman rated the film 7 out of 10, calling it “one of the most fun movies of 2025.” Before finding success through PVOD, The Housemaid also performed well on streaming platforms.

Starz announced that The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney, became its most-watched movie ever during its initial streaming window – the period after it finished playing in theaters and was available for rental. In the film, Sweeney plays Millie Calloway, a new housekeeper with a hidden past, who finds herself working for the Winchesters: Nina (Amanda Seyfried), who is emotionally troubled, and her charismatic husband, Andrew (Brandon Sklenar).

Things aren’t as simple as they appear. Following the success of The Housemaid, which is now available on demand, a sequel called The Housemaid’s Secret is being made. It’s based on the second book in the series and is scheduled to be released on December 17, 2027.
