‘Project Hail Mary’s Theatrical Return Follows a Christopher Nolan Trend

As a movie critic, I’ve been watching the box office numbers closely, and it’s been a wild ride. Just when it looked like Amazon’s Project Hail Mary might struggle – it was their biggest opening ever until The Super Mario Bros. Movie came along and completely blew past it – Amazon MGM Studios seems to be taking a page from Christopher Nolan’s playbook to try and rescue it. Hail Mary was a big hit, but needed around half a billion dollars in ticket sales just to break even, and it was looking like it might end up losing money before Mario and friends came to the rescue.

The studio hopes to boost international earnings and finally make a profit with Project Hail Mary, so they’re planning a one-week re-release in 70mm IMAX starting April 17, 2026. This strategy—often used by Christopher Nolan for his successful films, including his space movies—raises the question: how many times will they need to re-release the film in IMAX to turn a profit?

‘Project Hail Mary’ Follows Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’ IMAX Release Method

With its box office success uncertain, the science fiction film Project Hail Mary is taking a page from Christopher Nolan’s playbook. Nolan’s 2014 film Interstellar was a similar large-scale space adventure that relied heavily on visual effects and was best seen on the biggest screens possible. It was first shown in 70mm IMAX, which helped it earn $680 million despite a $165 million budget.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2024, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar was shown again in 70mm IMAX, earning an extra $100 million worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo). Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, is groundbreaking as it’s the first movie filmed entirely using IMAX cameras. Before its release in the summer of 2026, eight of Nolan’s earlier films will be re-released in IMAX, which is expected to significantly increase Warner Bros.’ revenue.

Amazon MGM is hoping to recoup costs for its $248 million film, Project Hail Mary, by using a strategy often employed by director Christopher Nolan. Starting April 17, 2026, the movie will be shown again in select theaters using the high-quality 70mm IMAX format for one week.

How Many Times Will ‘Project Hail Mary’ Be Re-Released in IMAX To Become Profitable?

After just three weeks in cinemas, reports indicated that Project Hail Mary needed to earn $500 million to cover its costs. By its fourth week, the film had surpassed that goal, taking in $510 million globally, as reported by Box Office Mojo. Amazon MGM Studios is relieved the film turned a profit, especially given its positive reviews and popularity, and is now hoping for a long and successful run in theaters.

Tickets for the IMAX version of Project Hail Mary cost between $15 and $22, and the film is expected to boost its earnings like Interstellar did. Just one week of showing the movie in IMAX could bring in a lot of money for the studio. IMAX reports that while only about 1% of all movie screens are IMAX, they can generate 20-25% of a film’s total box office revenue when a movie is re-released.

If Project Hail Mary earns an additional 25%—around $127.5 million—from IMAX showings, its total revenue could reach approximately $638 million. However, it’s still uncertain whether that amount would be considered a big success, justify a sequel, or simply lead to repeated IMAX re-releases, similar to what happened with Interstellar.

If you didn’t get to see Project Hail Mary in IMAX when it first came out, you’ll have another opportunity starting April 17th for one week.
