Criminal Minds is famous for its unsettling cases, and some are particularly memorable. The FBI agents featured on the show specialize in the most dangerous criminals, often serial killers. As a result, many episodes leave a lasting, disturbing impression on viewers even after the show ends.
Some of the most unsettling episodes of Criminal Minds feature truly unforgettable criminals – the show’s term for the perpetrators of these awful crimes. While it’s not strictly a horror show, many of the serial killers featured are genuinely terrifying. These episodes are especially impactful, leaving a lasting impression on viewers even after they’ve finished watching.
The BAU Travels to Canada and Finds Hell in “To Hell… and Back”
This two-part episode follows the BAU as they investigate a serial killer operating in Canada who preys on people experiencing homelessness. The hunt leads them to a pig farm just across the border, where they discover the killer has claimed many more lives than originally thought. A particularly haunting image of a dumpster overflowing with shoes underscores the tragic number of victims.
During the episode’s climax, the BAU discovers the killer, Lucas (Paul Rae), wasn’t acting alone. He was following the instructions of his brother, Mason (Garret Dillahunt), who needed victims for cruel experiments. Mason desperately hoped these experiments would cure his paralysis. Due to the large number of victims and the horrific nature of the experiments, “To Hell… and Back” is still considered one of
Tim Curry Terrifies Viewers in “Our Darkest Hour” and “The Longest Night”
As a huge fan of crime thrillers, I was completely chilled by the character of Billy Flynn, played brilliantly by Tim Curry. This guy was a seriously prolific serial killer, traveling all over the US and leaving a trail of terror. What made it even more unsettling was how Curry portrayed him – breaking into homes, brutally attacking people, and then… well, you can imagine. The really clever part of the story is how the BAU gets involved. Turns out, Flynn thought one of his past victims had died, but she actually lived and is now a detective, and she’s the one who starts hunting him down when he returns to California.
Flynn doesn’t seem to feel any regret for what he’s done, and his behavior is deeply disturbing throughout these two episodes. Even as the BAU gets closer to catching him, he continues to kill, ultimately being responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people. Both the sheer number of victims and Tim Curry’s chilling performance make Flynn a truly unforgettable villain long after the credits roll.
The Unsub Turns Victims Into Marionettes in “The Lesson”
Episodes directed by Matthew Gray Gubler often have a stronger horror focus, and “The Lesson” is no exception. The unsub, Adam Rain (played by Brad Dourif), experienced psychological trauma from a car accident, causing him to regress to a childlike state. He then kidnaps people and tries to recreate them as the puppets he remembered from his youth.
Although Adam’s victim count is relatively low at only three, the way he controls his victims like living puppets makes him one of the most unsettling criminals featured on Criminal Minds. The episode “The Lesson” is particularly frightening, feeling more like a horror film as Adam manipulates his victims’ bodies, forcing them to perform as his marionettes. Like other memorable episodes, it contains several truly disturbing and unforgettable images.
The Unsub Gets Away in “Into the Woods”
Cases involving children are always tough to watch, and this episode, “Into the Woods,” is particularly difficult. The BAU investigates the murder of a young boy near the Appalachian Trail, which leads them to Shane Wyland, a deeply disturbed man who has been kidnapping and killing children along the trail.
In this episode, Wyland abducts two more children and takes them to an abandoned mine in the mountains. The most unsettling part is seeing the older boy’s expression after a private encounter with Wyland. He then bravely assists his sister in escaping, and the BAU team successfully rescues them both. However, the episode concludes with Wyland still at large, continuing his search for another victim.
A Devastating Reveal Makes Things Even Worse in “Mosley Lane”
This week’s case involves a husband and wife who kidnapped children and raised them as their own, ultimately killing them when they became too much trouble or attempted to escape. Some of the victims had been held for years and were forced to help the couple kidnap other children. The couple ran a funeral home, using the crematorium to secretly dispose of the bodies of the children they murdered.
Beyond the already unsettling events, the episode poignantly portrays the anguish of the children’s parents as they await updates. The most heartbreaking moment occurs when two parents learn their child was alive just the day before, but tragically died while protecting another child. While Criminal Minds has often featured disturbing plots, “Mosley Lane” stands out as one of the show’s most devastating episodes.
