As a huge Marvel fan, I still think about Moon Knight. It’s been almost four years since it premiered on Disney+, and I was completely captivated by Oscar Isaac’s portrayal of such a complex character. Everyone seemed to love the show, especially his performance as Marc Spector and Steven Grant, but we haven’t seen Moon Knight reappear in the MCU since. It feels like a missed opportunity, honestly!
Oscar Isaac, who played Moon Knight, has finally discussed the possibility of returning to the role after a long period of not speaking about it. Although there are no confirmed plans for a Moon Knight comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe right now, he hasn’t ruled it out. However, he explained that bringing the character back presents significant challenges.
Oscar Isaac Wants to Return to the MCU as Moon Knight
Oscar Isaac, who played Moon Knight in the Disney+ series, recently said on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast that he’d be interested in reprising the role in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. Although there aren’t any current plans, Isaac expressed enthusiasm about potentially appearing in a Midnight Sons movie, which would allow him to delve deeper into the complexities of his character.
Oscar Isaac acknowledged the challenges of continuing the Moon Knight story. The Disney+ series focused on Marc Spector’s Dissociative Identity Disorder, where he develops multiple identities. Isaac hopes Marvel will thoughtfully and purposefully continue exploring Marc’s internal struggles if they choose to continue the narrative.
The actor explained they were working with practical effects and tackling very serious themes. He emphasized the importance of approaching the project with sincerity, even though it’s based on a fantastical comic book. The show aims to balance the light and the dark, the fun and the difficult. He also praised director Mohamed Diab, highlighting how Diab’s storytelling effectively portrayed the character Marc Spector’s inner turmoil.
Although Oscar Isaac hasn’t confirmed a quick return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his recent statements suggest Moon Knight could reappear in the future. He’s definitely interested in revisiting the role and even expressed enthusiasm about potential team-ups with characters like Blade and Ghost Rider. While it might be a while before we see Moon Knight again, it’s not out of the question.
Why Moon Knight’s MCU Future Is So Complicated
Oscar Isaac is hesitant to reprise his role as Moon Knight because of concerns about the story direction. But beyond that, other significant hurdles have kept the character off-screen for the past four years. Marvel Studios had envisioned a strong supernatural side to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Moon Knight playing a key role. A lot of this depended on a specific project, which was initially planned for Phase 4 of the MCU.
The Blade movie has faced numerous problems since it was first announced in 2019. The script has been rewritten several times, and the project has gone through multiple director changes. The release date has been delayed so often that fans have become skeptical of any new dates. Now, seven years after Mahershala Ali was cast, there’s uncertainty about whether the film will actually be made. If it does happen, it won’t be until after Avengers: Secret Wars, meaning it likely won’t be released until 2028 – nearly a decade after the initial announcement.
Recent changes have definitely impacted Marvel’s future plans for supernatural characters in the MCU. Originally, Moon Knight was likely going to team up with Blade and other heroes like them in a project similar to the Midnight Sons. However, since that team can’t appear until after the Blade movie is released, Moon Knight’s first appearance with other heroes has been delayed.
It seems a second season of Moon Knight on Disney+ isn’t happening because it was likely designed as a single, self-contained story from the start. While the show received positive feedback from both critics and viewers, Marvel Studios appears to have always intended it as a limited series – a one-time event rather than an ongoing saga. This was around the time Marvel was primarily focused on creating these kinds of single-season shows, and producers have hinted that future Marvel projects will continue the story after the events of Moon Knight.
The character’s absence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the past four years could be due to behind-the-scenes developments. While a movie featuring the character is desired, it might be a while before it happens. Marvel is currently finishing up its Multiverse Saga and planning the next decade of films, which has limited space for new projects. If both fans and the actor who played the character are still interested in the future, a movie isn’t out of the question, but the storyline is currently paused.
When Will Moon Knight Finally Return?
Don’t expect to see a new Moon Knight series or movie for a while. At the very least, it won’t be part of Phase 7 of the MCU. However, Oscar Isaac’s character might pop up in other Marvel projects before then, giving fans something to enjoy in the meantime.
Moon Knight might appear in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. These upcoming movies are shaping up to be a huge event for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing together many beloved characters to battle Doctor Doom. However, it’s worth remembering that Marvel actors sometimes aren’t truthful about their roles in future projects.
Moon Knight could also appear as a guest star in another Marvel movie or TV show, joining forces with other heroes. The upcoming Daredevil: Born Again features several street-level vigilantes who often team up with Moon Knight in the comics, making it a perfect fit. Seeing Moon Knight work alongside Daredevil, Jessica Jones, or the Punisher would be exciting. Another possibility is a future Spider-Man movie, where he could fight crime alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the Blade movie, many Marvel fans are still hoping to see a Midnight Sons team-up happen. This team would likely feature Moon Knight alongside other supernatural characters like Ghost Rider, Elsa Bloodstone, and Doctor Strange. Marvel appears dedicated to exploring this darker side of the universe, even if they need to significantly change their original plans. A Midnight Sons project feels like the most promising path for bringing Moon Knight back into the mix, if that ever becomes a reality.
It’s unclear what the future holds for Moon Knight within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there’s still a possibility Oscar Isaac could return to play Marc Spector again someday.
Moon Knight is available to stream on Disney+.
