Netflix’s Upcoming Romantasy Movie Will Make Up For ACOTAR’s Cancelation

Although Hulu has decided not to move forward with its adaptation of the ACOTAR book series, Netflix is planning a romantasy movie that should satisfy fans. It’s been difficult for streaming services to successfully adapt popular books from BookTok, and many attempts have been canceled.

Several promising projects based on Sarah J. Maas’s books, such as ‘The Cruel Prince’ and ‘Throne of Glass,’ have stalled or been canceled. ‘The Eyes of the Dragon’ never made it to production, but the biggest disappointment for fans was the cancellation of ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’.

A TV series based on ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ could have been Hulu’s biggest hit, potentially surpassing other book-to-screen adaptations. ‘Fourth Wing’ is the only real competitor, as it appeals to a similar audience, but there was definitely potential for both shows to do well.

Don’t expect to see A Court of Thorns and Roses adapted for the screen anytime soon. The author has regained the rights and is now looking for a new production company. Even if she finds one immediately, it would still take a significant amount of time to develop and create the series or movie.

With the cancellation of the popular “A Court of Thorns and Roses” TV show, fans are searching for something new to watch. Luckily, the upcoming movie, “Quicksilver,” seems like a great option. Based on a 2024 novel, it offers a similar fantasy romance vibe while also bringing its own unique elements to the story.

Netflix’s Quicksilver Will Be A Chaotic & Dark Romantasy

Both Quicksilver and A Court of Thorns and Roses share similar elements: a strong female lead and a mysterious, somewhat arrogant love interest who is fae royalty. The male characters in both stories start off as difficult, which sets the stage for a classic enemies-to-lovers romance. Interestingly, the love interest in Quicksilver also has the ability to read the heroine’s mind. However, many readers find the Quicksilver character, Kingfisher, to be more compelling.

While the new version shares similarities with the original, it also offers plenty of fresh changes. It’s much more realistic and focuses on the struggles of survival, delving into themes of poverty and offering a commentary on society.

While many know of fae, Quicksilver also includes vampires and alchemists in its fantastical world. It’s a much more unpredictable and twisty story than A Court of Thorns and Roses, offering plenty of romantic fantasy elements. If the upcoming Netflix adaptation lives up to the book, it’s sure to be a fantastic movie.

The Quicksilver Adaptation Will Bring The Spice Just Like ACOTAR

A major difference between A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) and Quicksilver is the level of explicit content. Quicksilver is much more sexually explicit – even more so than ACOTAR, which is already known for its steamy scenes.

Some viewers might be surprised by how sensual the series Quicksilver is, given Netflix’s reputation for generally milder content. It’s easy to assume they’d soften things up, but Netflix actually offers a lot of steamy and explicit shows and movies – they just don’t advertise them as prominently.

With the recent cancellation of the ACOTAR series, viewers might be hesitant about other fantasy adaptations. But a Quicksilver movie on Netflix is likely more secure. Both projects would be expensive to produce because of their elaborate fantasy worlds. The key difference, though, is the planned length – Quicksilver is intended as a movie, while ACOTAR was a series, meaning a much longer commitment.

Most Netflix shows like Quicksilver typically run around 1.5 to 2 hours long. This is significantly shorter than what Hulu would have needed for a single season of the ACOTAR adaptation – they would have needed over 8 hours of content. Adapting the book will require a much smaller time commitment overall.

If the first Quicksilver movie is successful, there’s potential for more films. The second book in the Fae & Alchemy series, Brimstone, was released in November 2025, and the third is scheduled for November 2026. However, it’s too early to say whether the movie will surpass the books, as the film hasn’t even been released yet.

Unless the movies were filmed and released one after another – which doesn’t seem probable – they’ll have enough time to see how well the first one does before deciding what to do next. If it isn’t successful, they won’t make more. If it is, they’ll continue the series. While it won’t be exactly like a TV adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses, it’s still a good option for fans.
