Running Point Season 2 Review: Hudson’s Charm Saves Sitcom From Flaws

Season 2 of “Running Point,” now streaming on Netflix, isn’t perfect in how it’s structured, but Kate Hudson’s performance really stands out. The show, created by Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen, proved in its first season that it could handle multiple storylines – family, basketball, work drama, and relationships – all at once. While it didn’t always balance these elements seamlessly, Hudson’s character, Isla Gordon, consistently delivered.

Season two of Running Point features the return of the original cast, with Justin Theroux playing a larger role as Cam Gordon. Isla, now President of Operations for the Los Angeles Waves basketball team, has started to improve things after a challenging but ultimately successful first season. However, Cam’s return from rehab complicates matters, and the relationships between Isla and her siblings – Ness (Scott MacArthur), Sandy (Drew Tarver), and Jackie (Fabrizio Guido) – are constantly changing as the business grows.

I really enjoy the straightforward storylines in Running Point season 2, but honestly, it sometimes lacks that gripping, long-lasting tension. As much as I appreciate it as a comedy – and it is good at quickly wrapping things up – that constant resolution without any real fallout started to feel a little predictable. Luckily, the show is saved by Hudson’s performance. They bring so much charm and genuine feeling to the scenes that even when the plot feels a bit formulaic, it still works, largely thanks to them.

Running Point Season 2 Falls Into Typical Sitcom Traps

The first season of Running Point quickly became a relatable workplace comedy with a heartwarming family dynamic. What really stood out, though, was how effortlessly the show played with familiar sitcom themes. However, the second season hasn’t maintained that strength, making it harder to understand what the show is ultimately about. In season one, viewers easily understood the relationships between Isla and her siblings as they grew closer. Now that those relationships are well-established, the show feels less certain about where it’s going.

The supporting characters in Running Point develop over the season, but their storylines sometimes make the central plot confusing. The show has a distinct feel, but it shifts styles frequently, preventing it from settling into a consistent tone. Relationships Isla has with potential partners and rivals often feel forced and unnatural. Instead of feeling like genuine connections, they seem designed only to move the story along, rather than arising from Isla’s personal or professional growth.

Season 2 of Running Point occasionally relies too much on predictable storylines. One plotline, involving Cam, felt over-the-top and made it hard to follow. It was good to see the main characters develop their personal lives, but the Gordon siblings often ended up in isolated stories that didn’t add anything new and actually limited their potential for development.

I really enjoyed laughing throughout season 2 of Running Point, but honestly, when it was over, I felt like not much had actually changed. It felt pretty much like what I anticipated, and I was hoping for something more significant.

Running Point Season 2’s Secret Weapon Is Kate Hudson’s Ability To Form Chemistry With Anyone

The real strength of Running Point has always been the performance of Sarah Hudson as Isla. She’s a hilarious character, and Hudson brings a natural charisma to the role, captivating viewers in every scene. While Isla’s storyline in season 2 isn’t always straightforward, Hudson is phenomenal to watch alongside any other actor. She portrays Isla’s relationships with her siblings with subtlety and depth, making the bonds with Brenda Song’s Ali Lee feel genuine, and her chemistry with former coach Jay Brown is electric.

Isla, as portrayed by Hudson in season 2 of Running Point, consistently delivered a strong performance. Even when the show’s overall plot felt unfocused, Hudson skillfully maintained a clear understanding of her character, bringing Isla to life with confidence. She effectively steered the narrative and helped to make the season’s weaker parts more compelling, essentially keeping Running Point grounded and on course.

Actor Name Role on Running Point
Kate Hudson Isla Gordon
Justin Theroux Cam Gordon
Scott MacArthur Ness Gordon
Drew Tarver Sandy Gordon
Fabrizio Guido Jackie Moreno

Even though Kate Hudson has great on-screen charisma, the show isn’t just about her love life. The supporting cast of Running Point is incredibly funny, especially MacArthur and Tarver, whose characters develop nicely in season two. Chet Hanks also stands out as Travis Bugg; his character is still awkward, but in a surprisingly funnier way this season.

Running Point Season 2’s Story Is Flimsy, But Still Feels Good

Season 2 of Running Point doesn’t progress through its storylines as smoothly as the first season, but it still flows well overall. While plot threads are usually resolved quickly—sometimes without much depth—the season effectively draws viewers into the characters’ emotional journeys. The stories remain genuine and complex, and the strong relationships between the characters ultimately hold the season together, even when the plot feels a little weak.

The problems with Running Point come from trying to juggle too many storylines and then resolving them too quickly and neatly, like a typical sitcom. Although the season aims for high stakes with the Waves, these moments don’t always feel significant. Even though the team’s success – and the happiness of those around them, like dancers and sponsors – are supposed to be crucial, the conflicts often get resolved too easily, leaving little emotional resonance.

The best parts of Running Point season 2 are the connections between the characters and how they interact, even in small scenes. The show also features fun guest appearances. It’s a light and funny comedy that’s easy to watch all at once, and while the plot isn’t always clear, it’s consistently enjoyable, hopefully enough to earn another season.
