Though Project Hail Mary appears to be a straightforward science fiction story, it subtly explores the somber effects of time dilation, creating a bittersweet feeling similar to that in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. While the core themes of sacrifice, friendship, and hope remain uplifting, the underlying science introduces a touch of sadness to the overall narrative.
Christopher Nolan’s film Interstellar prominently features time dilation as a key plot point. The movie’s more complex and scientifically-driven twists actually stem from its detailed exploration of how time can change relative to different observers.
Even the most powerful scenes in the film, like when Cooper watches videos of his family after his trip to Miller’s planet, use the concept of time passing differently to emphasize how much time he’s lost in space. While not directly shown, the way time changes also adds emotional impact to the ending of Project Hail Mary.
The Time Dilation In Project Hail Mary Explained
As a huge sci-fi fan, the way time works in Project Hail Mary really grabbed me. It all comes down to this idea called the Lorentz transformation, but honestly, the easiest way I could wrap my head around it was thinking about those speedster scenes in movies. You know, like Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past? The faster they move – getting closer and closer to light speed – the slower time flows for them. It’s like they’re living in slow motion compared to everyone else, and that’s basically what’s happening in the book!
Like in other stories, the protagonist of Project Hail Mary, Ryland Grace, experiences time differently than people back on Earth. Because his spaceship travels at over 90% the speed of light, his trip to Tau Ceti only takes around four years for him. However, 12 to 14 years pass on Earth during that same journey.
The difference in aging between Grace and Eva at the end of Project Hail Mary is explained by the fact that time passes differently for them. The book reveals that while Grace is 54, 71 years have gone by on Earth since he was born.
Both the book and the movie hinge on a key idea: Rocky’s people don’t understand the effects of relativity. Because of this, they pack way more fuel than necessary for their journey to Tau Ceti. This extra fuel ultimately allows Rocky to help Grace get back home, even if it means he’s a little delayed in returning to his own planet.
Despite this hopeful turn of events, the idea of time slowing down also adds a sad element to the film.
Project Hail Mary’s Time Dilation Mechanics Is Different From Interstellar’s, But It Has A Similar Bittersweet Ending
While both Project Hail Mary and Interstellar feature time passing at different rates, the reason for this is different in each film. In Interstellar, time slows down primarily because of gravity, not speed. The powerful gravity of the black hole, Gargantua, bends time and space, causing time to move slower for anyone nearby.
Although the two movies show time travel happening in different ways, they both emphasize how slowing down or speeding up time creates distance between the main character and their loved ones back home.
In Interstellar, the film clearly shows how Cooper’s daughter, Murph, ages much faster than he does, and he even witnesses her death. Project Hail Mary handles this differently, focusing on how dramatically Earth has changed since Grace departed. While he contemplates going back home at the end, nearly everyone he once knew is either much older or no longer alive.
By the end, Earth appears much colder due to the Astrophage draining the Sun’s energy. It’s no longer the vibrant, green world that Grace remembered before leaving on his mission.
Similar to Cooper in Interstellar, Grace from Project Hail Mary succeeds in saving Earth through a huge sacrifice, but he can’t regain the life he fought for. Luckily, like Cooper finding Edmunds’ planet and Brand, Grace discovers an unexpected friend in Rocky. Rocky helps him save stars, shares a special connection, and shows him that even nearly two centuries aren’t long enough when you care about someone.
