Psychological thrillers and crime shows are incredibly popular on streaming services, and Netflix has been delivering fantastic ones since 2026, including titles like His & Hers and Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole. Their newest series, the British psychological thriller Unchosen, confirms that this genre remains a real powerhouse.
According to FlixPatrol, the British thriller series is now the most-watched show on Netflix globally. It’s currently number one in the United States, as well as in countries like Argentina, Belgium, Denmark, and the UK. The show, titled Unchosen, premiered on April 21, 2026, and has quickly become a streaming hit in just two days.
What Is Unchosen About?
The story centers on Rosie, a wife and mother living within a strict religious community. She adheres to the community’s rules, which forbid contact with people outside of it, and limit the use of modern technology like cell phones. Within the community, women are expected to be submissive to the men in their families.
The story changes course when Rosie’s daughter, Grace, runs away during a storm and nearly drowns. A stranger appears just in time to save her, and this event causes Rosie to begin doubting her community, her lifestyle, and everything she thought she knew. However, this rescuer is hiding something himself.
The series Unchosen, created by Julie Gearey, features Molly Windsor as Rosie, Adam, and Fra Fee as Sam, the character who rescues Grace. The cast also includes Alexa Davies, Siobhan Finneran, Christopher Eccleston, Aston McAuley, Lucy Black, and Olivia Pickering. Despite currently being popular on streaming platforms, Unchosen hasn’t received overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Unchosen Received Mixed Reviews from Critics
Although it had some positive aspects, the series didn’t receive great reviews. Critics gave it a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a Metascore of 47. On IMDb, it currently has a rating of 5.9 based on fewer than a thousand reviews, likely because it’s a new show.
Anita Singh of the Daily Telegraph noted that Unchosen had the potential to be a compelling drama about a woman leaving a religious group. However, she felt the show veered into predictable thriller tropes, including a car chase and unnecessary kidnapping. Many reviewers shared this disappointment, wishing the series had instead delved deeper into the main character, Rosie’s, personal struggles.
However, some critics acknowledged the show’s flaws while still finding merit in it. Archika Khurana of The Times of India noted that the series had a promising and exciting setup, and while the atmosphere and acting were strong, the story sometimes felt slow or disjointed, ultimately making it a good, but not outstanding, watch.
I have to say, even though opinions seem divided, I’m not surprised Unchosen is still doing so well on Netflix! It’s consistently at the top of the charts in so many countries, which just proves there’s something really captivating about this British thriller. And honestly, with only six episodes packed with mystery, action, and suspense, it’s completely understandable why people are hooked!
Unchosen is available to stream on Netflix.
