I’m already getting excited! Even though the Michael Jackson biopic hasn’t even come out yet, the people involved are hinting that they’re thinking about making a second movie. It’s awesome to hear they might continue telling his story!
I’m really excited for Michael to finally hit theaters this Friday, April 24th! It’s going to be a deep dive into the life of the King of Pop, starting with his early days in Gary, Indiana, and following his incredible journey to superstardom. The movie stars Jaafar Jackson as Michael – which is amazing because he’s actually Jermaine Jackson’s son, making him Michael’s nephew! Colman Domingo and Nia Long are also in it, and I’ve heard great things about their performances.
During a conversation with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley about their film Michael, director Antoine Fuqua and producer Graham King discussed the possibility of future projects about Michael Jackson. King hinted at some ideas, but confirmed nothing is currently planned. Jackson himself expressed his willingness to explore more stories about the artist. Here’s what they had to say:
ScreenRant noted that the movie truly feels like a beginning – an origin story for Michael Jackson. They wondered if there are plans to explore more of his life in future films, suggesting there’s much more to tell.
Graham King says he’s been giving things some thought and will wait to see how things develop.
ScreenRant: Jafaar, you got more in you?”
Jaafar Jackson: I absolutely do. Yeah.
Nia Long: Yes he does.
The film’s development started in 2019 when producer Martin King – known for acclaimed movies like The Departed, The Aviator, Hugo, and Bohemian Rhapsody – obtained the rights to the story of Michael. Lionsgate then stepped in to help develop the project in 2022, and filming finally began in 2024.
The upcoming project will explore Michael Jackson’s early career with the Jackson 5, featuring Jermaine, Tito, Jackie, and Marlon Jackson. Other musicians, including Randy Jackson (who left in 2001), Johnny Jackson, and Jonathan Moffett, also performed with the group at various times.
The film explores Michael Jackson’s entire career, starting with his early days with the Jackson 5 and continuing through his incredibly successful solo work – he still holds many music industry records. His 1982 album, “Thriller,” remains the best-selling album of all time, with over 70 million copies sold. While the film primarily highlights Michael’s impact on music, it also delves into his personal life and how it shaped his career.
Michael, the new movie about the King of Pop, received a glowing review from ScreenRant’s Liz Declan, who gave it nine out of ten stars. She praised the film’s casting, costumes, and concert scenes, saying it truly captures the spirit of Michael Jackson. Declan also suggests the movie leaves room for a sequel, both through a post-credits message and by ending the story as Jackson begins to forge his own path. However, overall critical reception has been mixed, with a current score of 32%.
I’ll never forget hearing about Michael Jackson’s passing on June 25, 2009. It was a truly shocking day, learning that he’d died from a combination of propofol and other painkillers he’d been prescribed.
Michael releases in theaters on April 24.
