Mel Gibson’s early 2000s epic has been resurrected on streaming.
Mel Gibson is famous as an actor, but he’s also a talented director. He’s directed popular films like Braveheart (1995), Apocalypto (2006), and Hacksaw Ridge (2016). One of his biggest directorial successes came in 2004 with .
I’m really not surprised to see The Passion of the Christ doing so well on Netflix right now! It’s currently the tenth most popular movie worldwide, which is amazing. It’s up there with titles like War Machine, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, 40 Acres, and Extraction. It’s great to see a film with such a powerful story reaching so many people.
Mel Gibson’s movie has become a top 10 hit on Netflix in over 20 countries, including places like Brazil, Canada, and Spain. While it’s not streaming on Netflix in the U.S. right now, American audiences can still watch it by buying or renting it from most digital platforms.
Mel Gibson’s film dramatically portrays the last twelve hours of Jesus of Nazareth’s life, leading up to his crucifixion. Jim Caviezel plays Jesus, with Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene and Maia Morgenstern as Mary. Christo Jivkov, Francesco De Vito, and Mattia Sbragia also feature in the cast.
Mel Gibson, known for directing the upcoming film Flight Risk (2025), personally funded The Passion of the Christ with a $30 million budget. Despite earning $610 million globally, the movie received mixed reactions from critics, currently holding a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
After 22 years, Mel Gibson is planning a return to the story of his biblical film with a new movie called The Resurrection of the Christ. The film will be released in two parts: the first on March 26, 2027, and the second just over a month later, on May 6.
The upcoming film will have a fresh cast, with Jaakko Ohtonen taking over the role of Jesus previously played by Caviezel, and Mariela Garriga stepping into the role of Mary Magdalen, formerly played by Bellucci. Unlike the first film, which was made on a smaller budget, the two sequels reportedly have a combined budget of $200 million or higher.
I’m really curious to see how Mel Gibson’s upcoming sequels will do in theaters now, considering how much things have changed. But it’s wonderful to hear that people all over the world are still connecting with The Passion of the Christ! Knowing a new glimpse at the follow-up could be here within the year has me excited – I can’t wait to see what he’s been working on.
