Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian & Grogu
After a seven-year break, The Mandalorian & Grogu brings the world of Star Wars back to the cinema. The film follows Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu on a new adventure, where they encounter fresh challenges and enemies. The story introduces a variety of threats, including Hutts, Imperial leaders, other bounty hunters, and dangerous creatures, ultimately leading to a rewarding conclusion for Din and Grogu.
Despite all the exciting action, The Mandalorian & Grogu remains a story about the strong connection between Din Djarin and Grogu, whom he sees as a son. The movie deepens their relationship, building on ideas first introduced in The Mandalorian series, and gives Grogu a more central role than we’ve seen before.
The conclusion of The Mandalorian & Grogu significantly alters the lives of several characters and establishes exciting possibilities for future Star Wars stories set during the New Republic era. Here’s a detailed explanation of the ending and what it likely foreshadows for the franchise.
How Grogu Saves Din Djarin & Why Didn’t His Force Healing Work?
When Din Djarin was captured by the bounty hunter Embo and taken to Nal Hutta, the Hutt Twins took off his helmet because he wouldn’t hand over their nephew, Rotta. They then threw him into a pit filled with water, similar to the rancor pit Jabba the Hutt had in Return of the Jedi.
I was on the edge of my seat watching Din Djarin! First, he skillfully fought off a whole group of Amani warriors, and then things got really intense. He came face-to-face with this enormous, white dragonsnake, and it actually poisoned him! Thankfully, Grogu and the Anzellans were able to work together and blast an escape route open with explosives just in time. It was a close call!
Din Djarin fled into the swamps of Nal Hutta, telling Grogu to escape with the Anzellans in their ship while he created a diversion. But Grogu refused to leave his father, staying to protect Din after he was poisoned. He used the surrounding environment, even building a small mud hut, to hide the unconscious Din from the pursuing Droid Gotra soldiers and Embo.
Grogu uses the Force to try and heal Din Djarin’s injury, something he’s done before in The Mandalorian. Unfortunately, the poison had already spread through Din’s system. Grogu hides and cares for Din for several days before meeting a hermit in the swamps of Nal Hutta. When Embo comes looking for Grogu, the hermit refuses to reveal his location.
Perhaps most importantly, the hermit provides a remedy to save Din Djarin from the poison. Fortunately, it works, and a relieved Djarin awakens, sharing a new addition to the Mandalorian Code: “The old protect the young, and the young protect the old. This is the Way.”
The conclusion of The Mandalorian & Grogu is a wonderful step forward for Grogu’s character. It really shows his growing dedication to protecting Din Djarin, and how much his powers are developing as he matures.
The Mandalorian & Grogu Defeat The Twins
Once Din and Grogu were back on their feet, they decided to stand and fight the Hutts and rescue Rotta instead of just running away. This led to a huge, exciting action sequence – basically the climax of The Mandalorian and Grogu! It was a really satisfying way to wrap things up.
Din Djarin, piloting a stolen ship, deliberately crashes it into the enormous, fungus-covered base of the Twins. He and Grogu then battle through waves of droids and two giant mechanical units to confront the Twins directly.
Din and Embo have a thrilling rematch, while Grogu faces off against Embo’s pet anooba, Keibu. Grogu uses the Force to soothe the creature. Grogu also frees Rotta, Jabba’s son, who then joins the fight, battling the Twins. The Twins are eventually defeated and devoured by their own dragonsnake. Seeing the battle turn against them, Embo and Keibu wisely decide to escape when it becomes clear their employers are losing.
Adelphi’s Blue Squadron Comes To The Rescue – Is This The End of the Hutt Syndicate?
After the two bounty hunters were defeated, help from the New Republic arrived. Colonel Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver, led Blue Squadron to assist Din and Grogu in their fight against the remaining Hutt soldiers. Din then directed the Adelphi Rangers to aim their fire right at where he was standing.
Blue Squadron fired proton torpedoes at the Twins’ palace, destroying the strange, fortress-like structure. Din, Grogu, and Rotta escaped the collapsing palace by diving underwater, where they were rescued by Zeb Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels and brought aboard his U-Wing.
This significant event involving the New Republic hints that the conclusion of The Mandalorian & Grogu’s story led to the complete downfall of the Hutt Syndicate, a criminal organization that had been a fixture of the Star Wars universe for millennia.
The story reveals Emperor Palpatine instructed Darth Vader to eliminate the entire Grand Hutt Council sometime between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, which left Jabba the Hutt as the sole leader until Leia Organa killed him. Now, with the Twins gone and Rotta rejecting his father’s criminal organization, it seems the Hutt Clan has lost its power and will no longer be a significant force in the galaxy following this new Star Wars film.
Rotta The Hutt Joins The New Republic
Instead of continuing his father’s criminal activities, the story ends with Rotta the Hutt thinking about helping the New Republic at Adelphi Base. Zeb even jokingly offers him a uniform, though it’s unclear if it would actually fit the powerfully built Hutt.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I have to say the thought of Jabba the Hutt’s son becoming a key player in the New Republic is genuinely thrilling – and totally unexpected! Seriously, imagine a future scene where Rotta and Ahsoka Tano finally reunite. She saved his life as a baby during the Clone Wars, and seeing them together now would be incredible.
What’s Next For Din Djarin & Grogu? Sequel or New Season?
The final scene of The Mandalorian & Grogu shows Din Djarin and Grogu leaping into hyperspace in their newly acquired Razor Crest, hinting at many more adventures to come. The biggest mystery now is what those adventures will be.
If The Mandalorian & Grogu does well in theaters, Lucasfilm and Disney will likely consider making a direct sequel for the big screen, continuing their move away from streaming. However, they could just as easily decide to continue the story on Disney+ instead.
Jon Favreau, the creator and director of The Mandalorian, had already written scripts for season 4 before Lucasfilm decided to make a movie instead. Favreau explained that the movie’s development mostly moved in a different direction from those scripts, leaving the possibility of using them later on. However, the ending of The Mandalorian & Grogu strongly suggests that this isn’t the end of their story, no matter where it’s told.
The Mandalorian & Grogu is now in theaters from Lucasfilm.
