Rivals season 2’s villain enters his dark phase.
The series Rivals takes place in 1986 and centers on the intense rivalry between politician Rupert Campbell-Black and television executive Tony Baddingham, who both work at the independent broadcaster, Corinium Television. As their conflict grows, Tony brings in a new producer and convinces popular BBC broadcaster Declan O’Hara to join his team.
David Tennant, who plays the villain Tony, recently told Radio Times that viewers can expect his character to become even more frightening and unpredictable. He explained that after the dramatic ending of Rivals season 1, the already unsettling TV executive becomes significantly more erratic.
The first episode of the show ended with viewers wondering if Tony had survived an attack with a TV award during the finale. It was unclear if the villain was still alive. But the second season of Rivals quickly showed that Tony did survive, and he’s now even more focused on getting revenge on those who have wronged him. The actor playing Tony said his character’s desire for retribution makes him increasingly unstable.
The actor described how Tony’s brush with death led him into a much more fragile emotional state. Although he’s healing physically, his mental health is declining. David Tennant explained that the character has lost almost all sense of self-control, causing him to act more impulsively and unpredictably.
So, there’s something slightly unhinged about him, slightly more unhinged about him.
Rivals is a TV series based on Jilly Cooper’s Rutshire Chronicles novels. The show boasts a big cast, including Katherine Parkinson, Victoria Smurfit, Nafessa Williams, Bella Maclean, Emily Atack, and Danny Dyer, as well as David Tennant, Alex Hassell, and Luke Turner. Season one launched on Disney+ on October 18, 2024, and season two premiered on May 15, 2026.
The Rutshire Chronicles is a series of romance novels that began in 1985 and is still being published, with the latest book released in 2023. Several of the novels have been adapted for the screen, including Riders, which became a TV movie in 1993, and The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous, which was a miniseries in 1997. Besides these, another screen adaptation was made.
The first three episodes of season 2 of Rivals are now streaming on Disney+, with new episodes coming out every Friday.
