Be warned: This article reveals major plot details from Invincible season 4, episode 8, titled “Don’t Leave Me Hanging Here.” If you haven’t watched it yet, you may want to do so before reading further.
After a fantastic penultimate episode, the season 4 finale of Invincible took viewers by surprise. While expectations were high following the intense action, violence, and emotional drama of the previous episode – which brought the Viltrumite War to a head – “Don’t Leave Me Hanging Here” went in an unexpected direction.
After Viltrum was destroyed, Thragg established himself as Invincible’s greatest enemy by demonstrating his immense power. He defeated and killed Thaedus, severely injuring Mark, Nolan, and Oliver before retreating with the remaining Viltrumites. When Mark recovered, he understood their destination: Earth.
The epic finale began with a massive attack led by Thragg, but it quickly became clear this was all a terrifying hallucination experienced by the main character. When he and Nolan came back to Earth, things appeared to be back to normal. He happily reunited with family and friends like Debbie, Eve, William, and Cecil, but couldn’t shake the disturbing vision of Thragg murdering them all.
Mark was still anxious about the Viltrumites, as their location remained a mystery, and he feared they would eventually come to Earth seeking revenge. His worries proved correct, but things didn’t happen as he expected.
While flying over the city to think, Mark had another vision of Thragg, but this time it was actually him. Thragg, the leader of the Viltrumites, revealed that he and his army had secretly arrived and were disguised among the people, then he gave Mark a direct threat.
Thragg offered a deal: if he and his people were allowed to rebuild by interbreeding with humans – demonstrating they could successfully reproduce with them, as Mark proved – he wouldn’t destroy the planet. Mark, though hesitant, accepted, launching a major new storyline and solidifying season 4 as potentially the strongest in the five-year run of Invincible.
Why Mark Agreed To Let The Viltrumites Stay On Earth & Rebuild Their Empire
Mark didn’t agree to Thragg’s demands easily; it was a difficult choice he considered carefully. He immediately tried to attack Thragg again, but it was ineffective. Even when faced with overwhelming odds, Mark was prepared to reject the deal.
Thragg explained that a peaceful solution was the only way to prevent the destruction of both their civilizations. Mark seemed prepared to fight to protect his people, but the horrifying images of his family and friends being killed stopped him from objecting.
Ultimately, feeling he had no choice to protect Earth, Mark sadly agreed to Thragg’s terms, even though it might mean the destruction of the rest of the universe. While Earth will avoid being controlled by the Viltrum Empire, it’s almost certain they’ll resume conquering other planets as their population grows.
Trying to interfere with the Viltrumites would break their agreement, and even if Mark tried to warn Cecil or the Coalition, it would probably lead to Earth being destroyed.
Of course, the hero doesn’t want the Viltrumite villains from Invincible living near his people, especially given the emotional pain he’s still working through. But it seems like the only way to prevent a massive attack that could kill billions, and would likely target those he cares about most.
He decided to allow his enemies to remain on Earth and achieve their goals, believing this was ultimately the best course of action for the planet, even though it carried significant risks.
Mark’s Trauma Will Have A Massive Impact On His Season 5 Story
Throughout the fourth season of Invincible, Mark’s emotional trauma was a central focus, and it’s expected to continue into season five. After his father’s shocking betrayal in season one, Mark’s life as a superhero has only become more difficult, with new obstacles constantly appearing.
After a difficult battle with Conquest in season 3, Mark entered season 4 feeling troubled and unsure of himself. While he ultimately defeated Conquest for good in Invincible season 4, the fight put him in a coma for months. He quickly faced another challenge, suffering a severe beating by Thragg shortly after waking up.
The physical injuries weren’t Mark’s biggest concern. He was truly shaken by the realization that he couldn’t defeat Thragg, a feeling even his father, Omni-Man, understood. This left him constantly worried that Thragg would target and harm the people he cared about.
Even though he made a deal with Thragg, the protagonist is still deeply worried, particularly with the Viltrumites now settled on Earth. He’s so troubled he asked Cecil for help finding a therapist. On top of everything, Eve revealed she had an abortion, which caused him even more pain. This internal struggle will continue to be a significant part of the story next season.
As a longtime viewer of ‘Invincible,’ I was really expecting Mark’s return to his classic suit to signal a shift, a reclaiming of his power, so to speak. But honestly, season 5 is showing us a Mark Grayson I haven’t seen before – and it’s heartbreaking. We’ve seen him struggle with anger and disappointment, sure, but this feels different. He’s not just down, he’s truly broken, and I’m genuinely worried about how he’ll ever recover from this. It’s a tough watch, and a really compelling turn for the character.
Ultimately, the only path forward for him might be to go against his agreement and confront the Viltrumites, a decision that could shape the entire fifth season.
Allen May Be Tempted To Use The Scourge Virus On Earth
Wow, just when I thought the deal between Mark and Thragg was the biggest shock of the Invincible season 4 finale, they hit us with one last thing after the credits! Apparently, Allen, now in charge of the Coalition, found a secret message from the previous leader, Thaedus. This message, left in case Thaedus died, basically told Allen to unleash the scourge virus. Seriously, what a cliffhanger!
In the second episode of season 4, the Scourge virus was shown to be Invincible’s most powerful weapon against the Viltrumites. It killed over 99% of their population, explaining why so few Viltrumites are left today. While incredibly effective, the virus didn’t completely destroy the Viltrum Empire, which continued to function with a much smaller population.
Because of this, the Viltrumites are still the greatest danger in the universe and originally caused the planets to unite against them. Thaedus first tried to stop them with a virus, hoping it would change their behavior, but it failed and actually made the situation worse, leading him to develop an even more powerful one.
He’d only use it as a final option, as it would kill anyone with Viltrumite DNA – including himself, Mark, Oliver, and Nolan. However, after his death, Thaedus thinks it’s the only way to truly defeat the Viltrumite Empire. This puts Allen in a difficult position, because leaders across the galaxy are urgently searching for a way to deal with the Viltrumites.
Because Allen is such a kind person, he’d likely avoid using this information, especially since he helped Nolan change and is friends with Mark and Oliver. However, if he discovers all the remaining Viltrumites are here on Earth, he might see wiping them out – even if it means harming his friends – as the only way to truly bring peace to the galaxy.
Thaedus’ message is definitely influencing Allen’s decision, and although he’d prefer a peaceful outcome, he might be forced to take drastic action. This could be one of the most significant events in the entire Invincible story.
Invincible Season 5 Hints Debbie & Nolan Have A Future Together
It’s no surprise Debbie hasn’t forgiven Nolan after the horrific things he did. He killed thousands, almost fatally injured their son, and then insulted her by calling her a ‘pet,’ dismissing their entire marriage and causing her to become deeply depressed.
Nolan’s apology felt empty, unable to fix the hurt he’d caused. This sparked an incredible fight between Debbie and Omni-Man, where Debbie finally unleashed her anger and made it clear how much she despised him for his actions.
When Nolan came back to Earth after the war with the Viltrumites, Debbie still didn’t seem thrilled to see him, though it hinted that they might have a chance at a relationship. She decided to join him as he left the planet to be with their son, Oliver, and even allowed Nolan to carry her to the ship since it couldn’t land normally, though she wasn’t happy about it.
As they entered orbit, she gazed at Earth in what was likely the calmest moment the show has seen since its first season, not counting earlier memories. Their relationship is deeply damaged and a romantic reconciliation seems unlikely, though they might eventually be able to forgive each other.
Debbie hasn’t forgiven what happened, but the season finale hints she might be willing to let Nolan back into her life and try to share parenting responsibilities with him. While she’ll likely always harbor some resentment, it’s possible they could find a way to build a future together, even if it’s just as co-parents.
Invincible Is Moving On From The Viltrumite War In Season 5
Season 4 of Invincible focused heavily on the Viltrumite War, but the show is shifting away from that storyline in season 5. While the Viltrumites aren’t gone and still pose a danger, the next season will explore the consequences of the war and what happens afterward, as well as preparing for future challenges.
The next season will probably reveal more details about events on Earth during the Graysons’ absence, and show us what the Coalition of Planets is like now that Allen is leading it. We can expect some familiar trouble from smaller villains like Dinosaurus and Universa, along with the usual enemies, but there aren’t any entirely new threats being introduced this season.
After the intense conflicts of season 4, things might seem calmer and more serious at first. However, season 5 stays engaging because of its surprising conclusion, and it will be compelling to watch Mark deal with the Viltrumites arriving on Earth.
It’s also unclear whether these villains will participate in the upcoming conflict or remain on the sidelines, which adds to the anticipation for the next season. While Invincible seems to be moving past this major war, the Viltrumites are still the biggest danger, making their potential involvement in season 5 even more frightening.
