This summer, Hugh Jackman is starring in a new take on the classic Robin Hood story with A24. While Robin Hood has been portrayed many times as a heroic figure who steals from the wealthy to help the poor, this film, titled The Death of Robin Hood, features an older hero reflecting on his life of crime with a changed outlook.

The latest trailer reveals Hugh Jackman’s take on Robin Hood as an older, drastically different character. It also highlights the film’s generally dark and serious atmosphere.

Everyone talks about Robin Hood, recounts his adventures… but honestly? It’s all fabrication. At least, that’s what I, the man they call Robin Hood, have to admit. I spun those tales myself, a long time ago. I needed people to believe, to follow me even when things got dangerous, to willingly walk into the shadows with me. It was a necessary deception.

He continues, “We were monsters.”

The new film promises a thrilling and intense experience, revealing a grittier side to the Robin Hood story and the violent acts committed while he sought justice. The clip ends with Robin Hood declaring, “I am the outlaw. Robin Hood.”

Sarnoski, the director behind the praised films Pig (2021) and A Quiet Place: Day One (2024), wrote and directed the new action thriller. Filmed in Northern Ireland, The Death of Robin Hood follows a wounded Robin Hood as he confronts his violent past. After a final battle, he’s offered a chance at redemption by an enigmatic woman.

The Death of Robin Hood premieres in theaters on June 19.
