Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the first episode of From season 4, titled “Arrival.” The actor who plays the show’s newest antagonist discusses how the established monsters of From influenced their portrayal of the character.
The third season ends with the introduction of a brutal villain, the Man in Yellow (Douglas E. Hughes), who shockingly kills Jim Matthews (Eion Bailey). This is just the start of the chaos he brings to the town. As revealed in the beginning of season 4, the Man in Yellow has disguised himself as Sophia (Julia Doyle), a new resident and the pastor’s daughter.
During an interview with ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender about season 4 of From, actress Hannah Doyle discussed how the show’s nighttime monsters impacted her performance. She noted that while she considered them, she didn’t want to simply copy their movements or behavior. Doyle aimed to create a truly believable and original villain with the Man in Yellow, avoiding a stereotypical or cartoonish portrayal. You can read her full comments below.
I definitely took inspiration from those performances, but I really didn’t want to copy anyone or get too caught up watching other actors. It’s easy to fall into imitation, and I was aiming for something that felt real and authentic, like a fully-formed person, not just a performance of a person.
I really try to avoid creating stereotypical villains. I’ve noticed that when I draw inspiration from past characters, trying to combine elements of them, the result often feels unoriginal and flat – just a collection of tired tropes.
Doyle’s behavior, which contrasts with the monsters’, sets her apart and makes the townspeople less likely to suspect her. They see her as a simple, devout pastor’s daughter, and she’s successfully maintained that image. Her arrival in town with the pastor, Rhys Bevan-John, her fear after the accident, and her prayers with Kenny Liu have all contributed to her convincing disguise.
Although much remains unknown about the monsters and the Man in Yellow, some key differences have emerged, making it crucial for Doyle’s depiction of the creature to be unique. Notably, the Man in Yellow isn’t restricted to nighttime activity – we see this when he kills Jim and later appears as Sophia. In contrast, the monsters are limited to nighttime and must hide in the caves during the day.
The Man in Yellow is significantly different from the other monsters because he can fully change his appearance and voice to perfectly imitate other people. The monsters, on the other hand, simply switch between their terrifying, flesh-eating form and a seemingly normal, smiling face. Beyond these changes and their ability to feed, they don’t display many powers. The Man in Yellow, however, can convincingly disguise himself, and even cause a seizure or wake someone up with just a touch. Plus, his final words to Jim in the season 3 finale revealed he was also the mysterious voice heard on the radio in season 1.
Doyle’s behavior, which differs from the monsters’, sets her apart and makes the townspeople less likely to suspect her true identity. They see her as a simple, devout pastor’s daughter, and she’s done a good job maintaining that image. Arriving in town with the pastor, Rhys Bevan-John, seeming shaken after the accident, and praying with Kenny Liu have all helped her keep up the facade.
Doyle will be a key character in the show From going forward. Before killing the pastor, the Man in Yellow reveals he enjoys watching the townspeople turn against each other. He plans to keep causing conflict by continuing to disguise himself as Sophia and secretly manipulate the residents – a tactic that’s even more effective than the monsters’ attacks.
