Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the season 8 finale of The Rookie, episode 16, “Out of Time.” While season 8 of The Rookie has taken some big swings, it seems to have lost some of what made the show special – and even ABC acknowledges this with a single line of dialogue. The season started strong with a large-scale premiere episode filmed in Prague, a bold move for network television that showed ABC’s faith in the series. This ambitious episode was followed by several others that moved away from the show’s usual weekly case format, and viewers generally enjoyed the change.
Look, I’m a big fan of The Rookie, but season 8 has definitely had some problems. A lot of viewers, myself included, are getting tired of villains sticking around for way too long. It’s normal for these procedural shows to have season-long arcs, but it feels like they’re dragging things out. Plus, it’s frustrating when they focus so much on minor characters instead of the ones we actually care about. Honestly, the biggest issue is that this season feels like it’s losing what made The Rookie so good in the first place.
Miles’ Comment About Harper Highlights How Underdeveloped & Isolated He Is
Miles Penn returns in episode 16 of The Rookie‘s eighth season, just as a threat emerges against Liam Glasser. This happens while Glasser is already involved in a difficult custody battle, making the situation even more complex. John Nolan and Penn are assigned to guard the serial killer, bringing them face-to-face with the criminal. Surprisingly, it’s Penn, not Nolan, who has the more important conversation with Glasser during the hour.
Liam, seemingly enjoying the moment, asks Miles what Nyla Harper thinks about the police needing to protect him given their history. Miles simply replies, “I wouldn’t know.” This might appear as Miles avoiding the topic, but considering the show’s events, and especially his own storyline, it reveals how disconnected he is from the other characters. This disconnection stems from the fact that his character hasn’t been fully developed.
Although The Rookie centers around a main character, the show has always succeeded because of its strong cast and the relationships between them. A major problem with the current season is that the character Miles hasn’t been well-integrated into the team, which highlights how disconnected the show has become. We’ve seen very few meaningful partnerships this season, as the show has prioritized exploring many different storylines. While variety isn’t a bad thing, it shouldn’t come at the cost of the show’s central focus on its characters and their interactions.
Why Miles Is The Key To The Rookie’s Future
While Nathan Fillion is strongly associated with The Rookie, ABC should also focus on developing other characters. With most of the main cast having been on the show for several seasons, it’s important to introduce new faces who can carry on the show’s story if any actors leave. Long-running procedural dramas often refresh their casts, and The Rookie needs to build viewer connections with characters like Miles to ensure the show’s longevity.
Now that ABC has confirmed season 9 of The Rookie, they have a chance to address some issues with the show. Ideally, they’ll start making changes now, rather than waiting until the next season, to avoid further problems.
