Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again episode 6
The new season of Daredevil: Born Again is building out the gritty street-level side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and a recent hint suggests a secret character with ties to the Thunderbolts/New Avengers has been introduced. Thunderbolts features agents recruited by Valentina Alegra de Fontaine who eventually form a team and could become the foundation for the MCU’s New Avengers. It appears a character may have been secretly involved in the very beginning of their story.
Jessica Jones, played by Krysten Ritter, reappears in the sixth episode of Daredevil: Born Again, marking her return after seven years since her own show, along with other Marvel series on Netflix, ended. Before seeing Jessica team up with Daredevil, the episode reveals details about the team that was hunting her and her daughter, Danielle, and the person responsible for sending them: Mr. Charles.
Matthew Lillard plays Mr. Charles, a new character introduced in the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again. But recent developments involving Jessica Jones suggest he might have connections to important MCU figures that go way back. We already know he works directly for Valentina, which raises some interesting questions.
Jessica Jones Just Gave Us More Details About Daredevil: Born Again’s “Mr. Charles”
Okay, so before the newest episode of Daredevil: Born Again, we already knew this guy, Mr. Charles, was deep into some shady government stuff. He was working with Val and the CIA, and at first, it looked like he was just a behind-the-scenes guy – helping people like Wilson Fisk get back on top and basically making it easier for the government to do some illegal things. I’m talking moving weapons and military gear through that free port in Red Hook, all under the mayor’s nose.
In the latest Marvel episode, Jessica Jones uncovered a surprising connection between Mr. Charles and Daredevil – a connection she herself shares with Matt Murdock’s alter ego.
Jessica believes Charles is heavily invested in people with special abilities. Although she refused his job offer, she says others haven’t, suggesting Luke Cage is now working for him, which explains why he isn’t appearing in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again. This also raises bigger questions about Val and her connections to the Thunderbolts and New Avengers.
Did Charles Help Val Locate All The Thunderbolts?
If Mr. Charles is indeed searching for people with special abilities, as Jessica Jones suggests, it makes you wonder what his connection to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is and what he’s really doing for her. We’ve seen Val recruit heroes like Yelena Belova and John Walker, but Charles might be responsible for finding others with powers – like Taskmaster and Ghost – behind the scenes.
It seems Charles might have been secretly recruiting for Val, potentially playing a key role in building the future Thunderbolts team. If Luke Cage is also working with Charles, it’s likely Power Man is now involved in Val’s hidden operations. This is especially true now that many of Val’s powered individuals have become public as the New Avengers – though she originally planned to eliminate them to cover her tracks, that’s less relevant now.
I’m really intrigued by this Mr. Charles character, and I’m excited to see what happens with him as Daredevil: Born Again goes on. Plus, since Luke Cage is showing up in season 3, I’m hoping we’ll get to see more of Mr. Charles too – it’d be great if his story doesn’t end with just season 2!
Marvel Studios will release new episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season two on Disney+ every Tuesday night.
