Although the actors had hinted at it beforehand, Deborah’s romance with Nico Hayes in the fifth season, episode three of Hacks, titled “No New Tricks,” wasn’t a shock. Still, the storyline was surprisingly touching, offering sweet and revealing moments for all the characters.
Christopher Briney, known for his roles in Mean Girls and The Summer I Turned Pretty, appeared on Hacks as Nico Hayes, a new artist at the Palmetto hotel and a true fan of Deborah Vance. When Nico initially asked Deborah on a date, she thought it was just a publicity stunt – something she was happy to play along with. But she soon discovered his feelings were genuine, and this revealed a different side of her personality.
Deborah has always been very careful about protecting her feelings, afraid of being vulnerable. Her relationship with Ava was a turning point, giving her the courage to take chances in her comedy. Even in romantic situations, she’s held back, unwilling to fully commit. Building trust and letting her guard down has been a constant struggle for her in all areas of life.
Nico Hayes quickly overcame the obstacles, and his arrival injected a lot of energy and excitement into the fifth season of Hacks.
Nico Hayes Unleashed A Girly Side To Deborah That We’ve Never Seen
Deborah acted like a giddy teenager after her date with Nico. She was bursting with excitement, jumping around and immediately told Ava everything. She even asked him to be her date to Marty’s wedding, which was completely out of character for her just hours before.
After Nico ended things with Deborah, she reacted in a way that reminded everyone of a classic first heartbreak. She spent a lot of time feeling down and sent him a barrage of texts, but he blocked her number, which only made her send more. While her behavior wasn’t her best, there was something strangely satisfying about seeing her so openly emotional.
Throughout the show, Deborah followed her instincts, which was exactly what her character needed since the beginning. Even a difficult breakup with a famous singer made her seem energetic and vibrant. Remarkably, the storyline focused on the connection between Deborah and Nico, rather than emphasizing their age difference.
Somehow, Deborah And Nico Both Came Out Of Their Hacks Fling Looking Good
I’m really invested in Hacks, and while Deborah might seem like the bad guy to everyone else, I found her storyline surprisingly sweet. And Nico? He was such a well-written character – genuinely good and really sensitive. You could tell he truly cared for Deborah, but he was understandably hurt and felt betrayed when she called the paparazzi on their first date. It was a complicated situation, but I really felt for him.
Their immediate breakup seemed a little dramatic, but it showed how young and naive they both were, and definitely proved Nico had strong feelings for Deborah. It also revealed Deborah’s main weakness: even before their first date, she was convinced Nico was only interested in publicity and that she wasn’t looking for anything serious.
It quickly became apparent that her behavior stemmed from insecurity and a fear of getting her hopes up. Although Deborah relaxed a bit after their date, this underlying issue ultimately caused the relationship to fail, revealing a pattern where her expecting little often led to getting just that.
I have to say, I really loved seeing Deborah and Nico’s connection unfold, and even Ava’s storyline with her boyfriend surprised me! It was just so sweet to see both of them discover hidden depths in the men they were with. It felt like a really lovely message about how people can be genuinely good, and how important it is for men to be open and sensitive. It left me feeling really hopeful, honestly!
