Avengers: Doomsday Director Talks Spoilers

As the release of the new movie approaches in six months, one of its directors, Joe Russo, has offered some unexpected thoughts on the issue of spoilers. Spoilers have been a constant problem for Marvel Cinematic Universe films, particularly the big team-up movies like the Avengers series.

Russo doesn’t like spoilers, but he acknowledges that trying too strenuously to avoid them can actually create new issues.

According to Russo, audiences enjoy being surprised, which is a key element of what makes going to the theater fun. However, he also notes that there’s a risk of things becoming too controlled, leading to audiences being hesitant to fully participate.

Russo made these statements during an interview with his sister, Angela Russo-Otstot. Angela is the Chief Creative Officer of AGBO, the production company run by both Russo brothers, and she oversees its daily operations. She also shared her thoughts on avoiding spoilers and working with existing franchises.

We really focus on understanding the audience,” Russo-Otstot explained. “We often start by imagining ourselves as the viewers, thinking about what captivated us as kids and what appeals to us now. We carefully plan how to reveal details, especially when working with established stories that fans already have strong feelings and expectations about.

She explained that a lot of effort is put into keeping plot twists and surprises under wraps, so everyone can enjoy the story as it’s meant to be experienced. They strongly believe in protecting those surprises for all viewers.

Will Spoilers Ruin Avengers: Doomsday?

Marvel and the directors, the Russos, appear to be trying to prevent spoilers by proactively revealing certain plot details. For example, they’ve been openly discussing characters who might have otherwise been kept secret. This strategy is also being used with other elements of the story.

That trend is expected to continue. The movie will be re-released in “Infinity Vision” and will likely include new scenes that connect the events of Avengers: Endgame with Avengers: Doomsday.

A Lot Is Riding on Avengers: Doomsday’s Success for Marvel

Avengers: Doomsday is a significant film for Marvel Studios. It’s the first Avengers movie in seven years, following Avengers: Endgame (2019), and will feature the return of major stars who haven’t appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since. Among those returning is Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Doctor Doom. The movie also sets the stage for a large-scale crossover event across the Marvel multiverse.

Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on Dec. 16, 2026.
