After 4 Years, From Just Delivered Its Most Sadistic Twist Yet

Be warned, this contains spoilers for From season 4, episode 2, “Fray.” After four years and 32 episodes, the horror series From has introduced what many are calling its cruelest plot twist yet. The show has always been known for putting its characters through terrifying ordeals, and it set the stage for this with a shocking scene in the very first episode: an seemingly harmless old woman tricked a child into opening a window before revealing herself as a monster and attacking the child and her mother.

Things have continued to get worse for the characters in From. In season 2, the creature known as Smiley (Jamie McGuire) appeared to be killed, but he shockingly returned in season 3 after it was revealed Fatima Hassan (Pegah Ghafoori) had been carrying him as a baby. To start season 3, the monsters brutally killed Tian-Chen Liu (Elizabeth Moy) right before Sheriff Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau)’s eyes.

The season 3 finale of From delivered a shocking twist: Julie Matthews travels back in time hoping to save her father, Jim, but witnesses his death at the hands of the Man in Yellow. In the second episode of season 4, present-day Julie learns what happened to her father, and the way it unfolds is arguably the most disturbing moment the show has presented yet.

The Bait-And-Switch With Jim’s Body Is From’s Most Sadistic Twist

Early in the second episode of season four, Boyd discovers a bloody bag hanging from the motel sign. He and others fear it contains the body of Jim, who went missing the night before. Not wanting Julie, Ethan, or Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) to see the body, Boyd sends the children to the town barn.

This is precisely what the Man in Yellow intended: a dead animal in the bag and Jim’s body displayed horrifically in the barn. By leaving Jim’s corpse in the barn – a place Ethan once found comfort – and making sure Ethan and Julie were the first to find him, the Man in Yellow reached a new low, even for this story. He knew the children would be sent there and deliberately set the scene to maximize their pain and shock when they discovered their father’s fate.

The scene is particularly cruel when viewed again, because Julie reassures Ethan they’ll find their father on the way to the barn, and they do – almost immediately. However, the discovery isn’t the happy reunion Julie hoped for; it’s deeply upsetting and haunts both children. This makes Julie’s desperate attempt to travel back in time and save their father understandable, as she hopes to prevent the entire traumatic experience from happening.

The Man In Yellow’s Sophia Disguise Means The Next-Level Sadism Is Only Getting Started

Honestly, as shocking as it was to see what they did with Jim’s body, I have a feeling that won’t even be the worst thing we see before this series is over – maybe even before the end of this season. Now that the Man in Yellow can move around as Sophia, he’s got free rein to really mess with everyone, day and night. He’s already hinted at wanting to turn the residents against each other, and the Jim situation felt like just the first step in his plan to make that happen. It’s genuinely unsettling to think about how far he’ll go.

The Man in Yellow appears to have a surprising amount of knowledge about the characters’ pasts and their lives before they arrived in the Township. What’s even more unsettling is that he uses information they tell him – believing they’re speaking to Sophia – against them. So far, he’s spent a lot of time observing Kenny Liu (played by Ricky He), and in the second episode of season 4, he focuses his attention on Sara Myers (Avery Konrad).

Kenny and Sara are now likely targets for the dangerous plans of the Man in Yellow. This is especially worrying for Sara, as she’s been manipulated before and has let monsters control her. While she’s made a lot of progress overcoming that, the Man in Yellow’s next actions in season 4 of From could undo everything she and others have achieved.
