Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Focuses On Kirk & Spock Bromance

Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will heavily feature the iconic friendship between James T. Kirk (played by William Shatner) and Spock (Ethan Peck). The new season, consisting of 10 episodes, premieres on Paramount+ on Thursday, July 23rd. This will be the final season of Strange New Worlds, with a shorter, 6-episode fifth and final season to follow.

Though Spock and Kirk first met thanks to Nyota Uhura in season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, their close friendship really blossomed in season 3. Kirk’s initial command of the USS Farragut, as seen in season 3, episode 6, “The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail,” wouldn’t have gone well without Spock’s support.

The season 3 finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds showed Kirk and Spock becoming even closer after experiencing a Vulcan mind-meld. Paul Wesley will return as Kirk in season 4, and we’ll see their friendship develop further, though it might not always be easy.

Kirk & Spock’s Bromance Goes Harder In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4

The trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 hints at a deepening bond between James T. Kirk and Spock. In one scene, Jim gives Spock a hug, and Spock clearly isn’t thrilled about the physical affection.

Paul Wesley and Ethan Peck playfully referred to the close bond between their characters as “Spirk.” They recently discussed the possibility of deepening that connection at CCXP Mexico, according to a report from TrekMovie.

Ethan Peck notes that Star Trek often explores the theme of family, which he describes as a deeply connected and unbreakable bond. He explains that strong relationships require accepting even the parts of someone you don’t necessarily like. He sees the dynamic between Spock and Kirk as a perfect example of this, as they must coexist and collaborate despite their differences, and it’s precisely those differences that make their relationship so compelling and engaging.

I was just thinking about this, actually. Kirk definitely acts on impulse – he jumps into things before fully thinking them through. Spock, on the other hand, is all about logic. But I think what really connects them is that they both genuinely care and ultimately want what’s best for the Federation and for people. Ethan Peck noted that the heart is a keen observation, adding that the characters possess a strong moral center that completely aligns with their core values.

The friendship between Spock and Kirk seemed to be going well in season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but comments from Ethan Peck hinting at underlying disagreements suggest things might get more complicated in season 4. After all, Kirk and Spock are quite different people, and those differences create a compelling dynamic.

As a big Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fan, I’ve noticed something interesting: early on, Kirk really got under Spock’s skin! But apparently, Spock finds Kirk’s brother, Sam (played by Dan Jeannotte), even more frustrating. It feels like the more time Kirk and Spock spend together, the more their clashing personalities are going to become a central part of the show, which I’m totally here for!

In the original Star Trek series, Captain Kirk, played by William Shatner, and Mr. Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy, worked well together by accepting and utilizing their different strengths. But the versions of these characters we see in the newer stories are still learning to do that.

Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds promises to explore the dynamic between Spock and Kirk, highlighting their differences and how those differences drive both funny moments, compelling drama, and growth for both characters as they evolve into the iconic figures fans know and love.

Bones McCoy Won’t Complete Kirk & Spock Until The End Of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

With two more seasons and 16 episodes ahead, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has plenty of time to develop the close friendship between Kirk and Spock, highlight their contrasting personalities, and prepare them for their future roles as Captain and First Officer on the Enterprise. But the final element needed to complete their journey won’t appear until the very last episodes of the series.

Thomas Jane will play Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, and Kai Murakami will play Hikaru Sulu, but we won’t see them until the final episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The season finale will show Kirk’s very first day as Captain of the Enterprise, and that’s when Sulu and Bones become part of his crew.

Even though Star Trek: Strange New Worlds won’t have much time to fully develop the classic relationship between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, the show will likely establish a strong friendship between Kirk and Spock before McCoy joins the crew. McCoy will definitely push Spock’s buttons – and Spock will do the same to him – much to Kirk’s amusement.

As a big Star Trek fan, I’m really disappointed to hear that the rumored spin-off starring Paul Wesley, Ethan Peck, and Thomas Jane – Star Trek: Year One – seems to be off the table. It looks like the sets they built for Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy in Toronto have already been torn down and sold, which is a pretty clear sign. Sadly, it’s starting to feel like the Strange New Worlds finale might be the only time we’ll ever see Kirk, Spock, and McCoy together on screen.

As a longtime fan, I’m thrilled to say the dynamic between Kirk and Spock is still going strong, and season four of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds promises to really put their friendship to the test. Honestly, their bond is one of the best parts of Star Trek, and it’s clear we haven’t seen the last of their struggles and triumphs together. They’ve got a lot of journey ahead, and I, for one, can’t wait to see where it takes them.
