Blake Lively has settled her legal dispute with the companies behind the film that sparked the controversy, avoiding a trial. This comes just a month after a judge dismissed most of her original claims. TMZ reports the actress has reached an agreement with the ‘Wayfarer Parties,’ ending the long-running drama.
So, the lawsuit between Blake Lively and the Wayfarer Parties? It was scheduled for a trial on May 18th, after initially being set for early April. But thankfully, it seems they’ve reached a settlement, meaning we won’t be seeing this play out in court after all. It’s officially closed.
The It Ends With Us Legal Drama Is Finally Ending
It’s unclear exactly how this outcome was reached, especially considering Lively had publicly and passionately advocated for her voice – and the voices of other women who felt silenced. The recently released joint statement seems to acknowledge this, stating that the issues Lively brought up were worthy of attention.
Everyone involved with the movie It Ends With Us is incredibly proud of it. We hope it will raise awareness and help those who have experienced domestic violence, and all forms of trauma – that’s what we set out to achieve.
We understand the recent process was difficult and that Ms. Lively’s concerns were valid and should have been addressed. We are dedicated to maintaining workplaces that are fair and productive for everyone.
As a huge movie fan, reading that statement felt… strange. It genuinely seemed like the parties involved were aiming for the same kind of resolution Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds pushed for after the initial criticism of the It Ends With Us film. Remember how they wanted the production companies to acknowledge the issues and take responsibility for a ‘difficult’ shoot? This felt almost exactly like that, and I really hope it helps everyone involved – both those directly affected and the online community – find some peace and move forward.
What Happened in the Legal Drama?
The issues started during the making of the movie based on Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel. Everything appeared fine publicly, as photos from the set looked normal. However, fans began to realize that Blake Lively wasn’t interacting with Justin Baldoni, who played the lead role and also directed and produced the film.
Trouble on the set became public at the movie’s premiere in early August 2024 when the cast deliberately avoided acknowledging one of the stars, Baldoni, on the red carpet, and the director chose to pose for photos by himself. Soon after, rumors began circulating about a disagreement between Lively and Baldoni. Initially, these were just guesses, but when a journalist shared an older video showing Lively behaving unkindly, people started looking into Lively’s history and uncovered a pattern of negative behavior. This led to a strong public reaction, though the controversy had mostly died down after a few months.
But the story wasn’t over yet. By December, the initial excitement had died down, until Lively filed a complaint against Justin Baldoni, which was quickly reported in The New York Times. The article, however, presented a one-sided account heavily influenced by Lively’s perspective, giving the Wayfarer Parties very little time – less than a day – to address the claims.
The legal battle continued to escalate, eventually involving celebrities like Taylor Swift and Matt Damon. Blake Lively had initially accused Justin Baldoni and producer Jamey Heath of sexual harassment, and she alleged that speaking out led to a damaging online smear campaign against her.
Lively stated the alleged negative publicity cost her $161 million in potential earnings. This includes profits from a possible sequel to her book It Ends With Us (titled It Starts With Us), future acting opportunities, and revenue from her businesses: Betty Booze and Betty Buzz beverages, and her Blake Brown haircare line.
All the legal drama surrounding the film was pretty wild, especially with Justin Baldoni’s defamation suit getting tossed out. But what really came out of it was just how hands-on Blake Lively was with the whole production. She even wrote a letter to the Producers Guild of America trying to get official producer credit – it showed she wasn’t just an actress, she was really involved in making the movie happen.
Recently released documents show that Blake Lively requested Sony executives to delete some raw footage from the film. In a message from September 3, 2024, Andrea “Ange” Giannetti told Josh Greenstein that Lively had asked them to destroy certain “dailies” (rough cuts). Giannetti also planned to ask all vendors to delete their copies of the footage and provide confirmation, noting it was a rare request, especially for a film without any nudity.
During her testimony, Lively stated she didn’t request anyone to remove the daily footage. However, recently released documents suggest she might have been dishonest under oath, as they contradict her claims.
Lively’s lawsuit, which involved claims of broken agreements and retaliation, was scheduled to go to trial on May 18th, but it has now been settled. The details of the settlement haven’t been released.
