As the Multiverse Saga nears its conclusion, many fans are looking back at the Infinity Saga, which truly launched the franchise into a cultural phenomenon. The Avengers films were central to connecting everything in that saga. But do those movies still stand up well now, almost five years after the last one came out?
The first Avengers movie came out in 2012, and was followed by three more: Age of Ultron in 2015, Infinity War in 2018, and the hugely popular Endgame in 2019. While these four films were crucial to the franchise’s success, looking back reveals some things fans might not have noticed before.
The Films Underused Hawkeye
Clint Barton, a skilled but ordinary man fighting alongside gods and monsters as Hawkeye, didn’t get nearly enough focus in the Avengers films. While he had some standout scenes – like his conversation with Wanda and his intense storyline as Ronin after a personal tragedy – he was overshadowed by bigger characters like Captain America and Iron Man.
Initially, people didn’t mind Hawkeye being a secondary character because he wasn’t very well known. However, after the release of the Hawkeye series in 2021, viewers who revisit the earlier movies now realize how little attention was given to developing his character.
Some Villains Are Too Small Compared To Their Successors
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a huge, ever-expanding franchise, and sometimes that growth works against it. While it’s constantly trying to top itself, this can make earlier movies less enjoyable on repeat viewings. When you revisit the original Avengers films, the older villains – like Loki, the Chitauri, and Ultron – don’t seem as impressive when compared to the threats that appear later on.
These earlier villains weren’t bad, but the MCU later introduced much larger, more impactful threats. Villains like Thanos and the Scarlet Witch had such a significant effect on the entire universe that they make Ultron seem relatively minor in comparison to the rest of the Avengers’ battles.
Captain Marvel Got Benched
Captain Marvel didn’t join the Marvel Cinematic Universe until 2019, so it wasn’t surprising she was absent from earlier events like the Chitauri invasion, the battle against Ultron, and the fight with Thanos in Wakanda. But after Nick Fury finally contacted her, fans began to question why he hadn’t reached out for help much sooner.
Fans became increasingly frustrated with Captain Marvel’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite being portrayed as immensely powerful, she had very little presence in the films. It feels like a missed opportunity to have such a strong character seemingly absent when Earth needs protecting, especially considering her limited screen time in the later movies just made things worse.
The Stones Aren’t As Incredible Anymore
The Infinity Stones were central to everything that happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They were crucial for Thanos’s plan to eliminate half of all life, and later, for the heroes’ efforts to reverse his actions. When Loki presented the Stones as simple, unused objects, he hinted at what many fans suspected: the story of the Infinity Stones was just one chapter in a much larger, ongoing saga of power within the MCU.
The joke involving the multiverse in Loki was amusing, but it unfortunately diminished the enjoyment of rewatching the Infinity Saga. Knowing that countless other universes exist, potentially with even greater dangers, made some of the most exciting moments in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame feel less impactful.
The Quippy Humor Is Not As Great As It Used To Be
When The Avengers first came out, it was witty and featured a lot of playful back-and-forth between the characters. The quick, humorous arguments, especially between Tony Stark and the other Avengers, really established the movies’ unique style and helped the Marvel Cinematic Universe stand out from other, more serious superhero films.
The once-clever humor in these films quickly became repetitive and predictable. It’s now a common complaint about Marvel movies, and rewatching the earlier films reveals how overused these jokes have become. Lines that were once memorable now feel stale after being repeated for over a decade, changing how audiences experience those moments.
Some of the Film’s CGI Didn’t Age Well
The first Avengers film came out in 2012. Although Marvel Studios has often led the way in improving special effects, they’ve also occasionally released movies with noticeably poor visuals. Back then, audiences were so thrilled to see these characters come to life on screen that they didn’t really notice any flaws, and tended to overlook them.
Watching Avengers: Age of Ultron again after many years shows that it hasn’t aged well. Certain moments, particularly with the Hulk, come across as overly silly, which diminishes the impact and seriousness of the action sequences.
The Snap Holds Heavy Emotional Weight
It’s difficult to rewatch Avengers: Infinity War, not because it’s a bad movie, but because it’s so good – especially the ending. The climactic battle in Wakanda was amazing when it first came out, but now it’s painful to watch, knowing the devastating consequences that follow.
One of the most difficult parts of watching this film is seeing Black Panther disintegrate while trying to save his soldiers. Knowing that Chadwick Boseman tragically passed away makes that scene even more heartbreaking for viewers. While fans might enjoy rewatching Infinity War for its exciting action, the film’s sad ending will always be hard to watch.
The Original Six Will Never Be A Thing Again
With the introduction of heroes like Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Hulk, Marvel’s The Avengers brought them together as a team. The iconic shot of all six heroes preparing to battle the Chitauri is a standout moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it signaled to many viewers that Marvel Studios had created something truly special.
Despite the addition of new heroes and the team’s enduring popularity, the original Avengers’ time together eventually came to a close. Avengers: Endgame served as their final on-screen team-up, following a gradual decrease in shared screen time over the previous four movies. Knowing this makes revisiting those films a bittersweet experience.
Some Heroes’ Final Fate Still Hurts
It’s enjoyable to rewatch the Avengers films, but it’s also a bit sad remembering that some of those heroes are no longer with us. For instance, both Natasha Romanoff and Tony Stark died to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, and Wanda Maximoff sacrificed herself at the end of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
Marvel Studios created characters that people genuinely adore. Moments like the team enjoying shawarma or Black Widow’s farewells have become especially poignant for fans, who now understand how quickly these cherished times can pass. While nostalgia for this era is strong, the understanding that these characters won’t be around forever is even more impactful.
A Crossover Like Endgame Will Never Happen Again
Avengers: Endgame lived up to the hype, and for good reason. The movie brought together all the heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a massive showdown against Thanos, the franchise’s biggest threat yet. After seven years of careful planning and storytelling, this film felt like the ultimate superhero movie experience.
Even years later, Endgame still holds up as a fantastic film, but rewatching it now is a bit sad. It’s a powerful reminder of how good the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be at its peak, and that those days are likely behind us. Marvel continues to try and recreate the magic of the Infinity Saga, but it’s proven impossible to recapture that same success.
