Spoiler alert! This article contains major spoilers for Scream 7.
Scream 7 carries on the tradition of the popular Scream movies, finishing with a twisty and self-aware conclusion. The latest film brings the story back to Sidney Prescott, the original main character. However, the biggest questions revolve around who the killers are and what this ending means for the future of the series.
The latest installment, Scream 7, features Sidney Prescott’s daughter, Tatum, as a key character. She finds herself in danger when a new Ghostface appears, claiming to be the original killer, Stu Macher. The film reunites us with returning characters like Gale Weathers and the Meeks-Martin twins, while also introducing a group of new, and ultimately doomed, teenage characters who fall victim to Ghostface’s violence.
Scream 7’s Ghostface Killers Are Jessica, Marco & Karl Gibbs
Following the established pattern of the Scream franchise, Scream 7 features more than one person hiding behind the Ghostface mask. The main villain is Jessica, who appears to be a kind neighbor of Sidney Prescott. She’s working with Marco, a psychiatric orderly, and Karl Gibbs, a known serial killer who is obsessed with the Stab movies within the film’s universe. While Jessica’s backstory is intended to add layers of psychological complexity and self-awareness to the story, it doesn’t quite feel fully fleshed out.
Jessica shares that she was in an abusive marriage and found comfort in Sidney Prescott’s story of surviving Ghostface. Sidney’s strength inspired Jessica to kill her husband, but instead of finding peace, Jessica became fixated on Sidney. In Jessica’s mind, Sidney stopped being just a survivor and became a symbol of something more.
I was really shocked when Sidney wasn’t in Scream VI during the New York killings – it felt like she’d abandoned us. Jessica was completely devastated, and she ended up checking herself into a psychiatric facility to cope. That’s where she met Marco and Karl, and I was so worried about her, but also hoped they could help.
Karl is deeply obsessed with the Stab movies and has become dangerously fixated on the fictional world they portray. His room is packed with *Stabrelated artwork and collectibles, even including a picture of Tori Spelling in her role from the movies. It appears his actions stem from taking his fandom to an extreme level.
The Scream series has touched on this idea before, but Scream 7 doesn’t develop it completely. Marco is also a bit of a weak link; while important to the plot, we never really understand why he’s doing what he’s doing, making him feel like a tool for the story rather than a fully developed person.
Stu Macher Was An AI Creation
A surprising development in Scream 7 is the possible return of Stu Macher. Throughout the movie, Sidney receives video calls from someone who strongly resembles Stu (played by Matthew Lillard), complete with the facial scars he received in the first film and references to past conversations.
It turns out the heroes were right: “Stu’s” face and voice were actually created using deepfake AI. Marco explains he used his skills from working at Google to make the AI, and then reveals that Jessica was the person Sidney had been talking to all along, posing as “Stu.”
Fans have long hoped for Stu Macher’s return, and Scream 7 playfully acknowledges this desire. The film uses the explanation of AI to explore themes of nostalgia and the risks of trying to revive past events. These ideas appear throughout the movie, particularly when discussing horror sequels and the continuing story of Sidney Prescott.
Ghostface Planned To Kill Sidney And Turn Tatum Into The New Final Girl
Jessica and her friends aren’t just seeking revenge; their plan is a bit more complex. She’s upset with Sidney for trying to live a normal life after everything that happened in Scream VI. Jessica believes Sidney has failed to live up to her responsibility as the iconic ‘final girl’ who should always be in the public eye.
The killers’ plan isn’t just to kill Sidney, but to completely devastate Tatum by killing all of her loved ones while she watches. Jessica hopes this will create a second, traumatized version of Sidney – someone shaped by the same kind of violence. This is the film’s most direct and meaningful commentary on itself.
Scream 7 tackles the question of how long Neve Campbell can continue as the lead in the series. By introducing Tatum as a potential successor, the film smoothly connects the past with what’s to come. The film’s villain, Jessica, believes horror movies need final girls, and if the original isn’t available, a new one must be made.
A New Core 3 For Scream 8
The story reaches its peak when Sidney and Tatum team up to defeat Jessica in a fierce and violent fight, strengthening their connection. Afterwards, Sidney vows to teach her daughter self-defense, symbolizing a passing of the torch to the next generation. The film also sets up Tatum as the new central heroine for future installments.
Mindy and Chad have been collaborating with Gale, who’s back to reporting in the field. In the last scene, Gale passes the microphone to Mindy right before a live broadcast, representing a shift in storytelling to a new generation. The connection to the original three characters is clear and intentional.
Tatum embodies the classic ‘final girl’ character, similar to Sidney. Mindy takes on the role of the intelligent and media-aware Gale. And Chad acts as a stand-in for the protective Dewey. Just like the first three Scream movies centered on Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, the next installment, Scream 8, will likely focus on Tatum, Mindy, and Chad as the new central trio, carrying the franchise into the future.
Is Stu Macher Really Dead?
Even with the introduction of AI in the latest Scream 7, a major question remains: is Stu Macher still alive? Gale and Sidney uncover that the documents proving Stu’s death are nowhere to be found, leaving the possibility of his survival intentionally unclear.
It’s possible Stu was never actually killed, or Jessica and her team may have hidden evidence to make everyone believe he was. After the murders, they insisted Stu was dead, but because they’ve been so dishonest, their statements aren’t reliable. The records that are missing still haven’t been accounted for.
The ongoing ambiguity feels deliberate. While J.T.’s growth and Mindy’s career path suggest where future stories could go, the mystery surrounding Stu’s situation seems designed to keep audiences hooked for potential sequels. If the series ever returns to its original storyline, the unresolved paperwork from Scream 7 offers a convenient way to bring things full circle.
